old dogs

OK going to stick my neck out here. Situation: I have 2-3 months time to maybe find home for a Walker bitch who's owner after zapping her in box for barking found she wouldn't load henceforth without a prybar & decided to just use her for breeding and will be done using her for pups come Nov.. At which time he intends to shoot her. Hellfire I say that's ****ed ungrateful. Is this standard practice?

First of all the dog should have never been bred if she wasnt proven. If the only fault she had was she didnt want to load then I've had quiet a few nice hounds that would'nt have made it at his house. No, its not standerd practice and I hope that no one takes him out back and puts one in his head because he isnt needed at his job anymore. If your going to have something you should realy be smarter then it is, it doesnt sound like this gye is.

NO

He needs to read UKC rules of breeders ethics. If he used her for pups they were probably registered. This type of guy is the type that his dogs look like washboards and have fleas and ticks all over them.

Y'know I had a dude who breeds those Majestics (bloodhound/coonhound cross) ask me "how old did I get rid of my females" and I was so confused I couldnt understand what he was asking, and finally I figured out he thought maybe I'd "cull" an old female and he could get one more litter out of her. NOT AT MY HOUSE!! Dwayne's old retired pup trainer True went down the tubes fast last year, too arthritic to hunt, and corneas starting to cloud as well. She been spayed and lives in the house now, her job is to hold down the couch. She's on meds for her arthritis and is a happy albeit mostly stationary dog, and she doesn't owe us a thing. Our old mama dog is going strong at age 7, she looks like an old buzzard but heck I championed her out at age 7, including getting her BIS with competition, and she can tree a coon too. We might get one litter out of her, then she'll be spayed and when she is unable to hunt she too can live out her days here. A dog is not a paper plate, you don't use them up then throw them away. How 'bout some loyalty for what these old dogs have given us?

p.s.

Wayne,
OK I've simmered down now and must add: a) a woman in NH has expressed possible intrest in the Mags. being inexperienced in this dog adoption business I suppose if she is nice and can give Maggie a good home, she has first dibs?
b) it occurs to me that I should know more about who I am handing the fine lass over too. My gut impression is you are a coon hunter with a bit of a compassionate streak. a good guy. do you have alot of dogs? I mean would you just kennel her up?
FYI talked to her present owner this morning to get more info and found out Maggie is only 3 and only had 2 litters of pups. hunted a couple times but not sure how she really performs.
I met her when she wouldn't load and and I let her ride up front with me to go for rabies shot. She struck me as a real lady.
OK I'll roll now, with thanks again. real fine to hear the responses anyhow.
