Alot of people cat hunt on the costal plains of NC in the cutovers. This is the way I have hunted them with friends that have cat dogs. First they drive cutover roads in the morning to try to find fresh sign. Most of the time a cat will mark his territory then scracth the ground like some dogs. They look for fresh skat or tracks. For the most part it seems the cats like to be touching on all four sides. (thick cover) After they find the sign they will turn the trailing dogs out. (usually 2 to 4 dogs) after they jump the cat they will pack the other hounds to them. I have seen anywhere from 6 to 10 hounds packed. Thats how they help keep the cats treed but they still jump out every now and then, and the hounds catch them on the ground alot. If they dont find any sign or the grounds to hard they will put their trail dogs infront of the truck and drive the cutover roads till they strike a track. If you like to see good dog work, the trailing dogs can put on a show. After they pack the other dogs its just a constant roar. Its alot of fun, but sometimes the cats can be hard to find.
