there pretty simple, as far as tracking goes..if i can figure one out, anybody can..get a long range antenna for it just to be on the safe side..but i have never had to use it yet.

Jim,
They are piece of cake to figure out how to use them and be functional. I haven't figured out all the bells and whistles that it offers but I can use it to keep tabs on my hounds and it has saved my dogs many close calls from getting near roads and saved me hundreds of miles of walking and I haven't had one for even a year yet.
You might not know him... but an old pelter down here, Bud Thompson, bought one at 79 years old and even he could use it to find it dog. There is an option on there with a compass and tells you the direction and distance of the dog. I know a few hunters not real keen on technology that use that feature only and it works for them.
I generally use the map. I know where my dogs are and it shows the terrain so I can figure out the best way to get to them.
Buy a Garmin, you'll never go back to hunting without one.

I've never paid attention. Most my hunting I can find a road within a 1/2 mile if needed. I've had it drop signal once the dogs get over 3/4 of a mile but by that time I'm generally in the truck trying to find an easier way to get around. Anytime I've lost signal, it pops right back up. Never lost signal for more than a couple minutes.
I've hunted with Chris H in that area and never had in problems. He has a the truck attenae as well so if he can get them on the hand held, he can get them on the truck.
He was just telling me today, last fall he was hunting Whitewater and dogs had gotten out of pocket. He plugged his into the truck and picked up his dogs no problem and picked up Holst's dog in another section 2-3 miles away where they were hunting. In Whitewater, that's pretty amazing.
I guarantee I wouldn't hunt Whitewater or Red Wing without a Garmin.

jim, if you run a marine radio. you might be better off with a handheld LR antenna..the magnetic roof mounts have burned out some garmins when mic is pushed on the marine radio..and the handheld can stay with you all the time, and not have to go back to the truck.

you can not run

anything with a 151 signal neer the garmin it will burn them up
because thats what the collar uses to comunicate with the unit a 151 sygmal and the hand held uses that 151 signal to place into a gps cordinate.
