Have any of you had any experiance with your dogs haveing seizers and if so is there any kind of meds you can get to help prevent or stop them thanks in advance.

Chris, I had a pup several years ago that had them a couple times. Vet said wait and watch it because they often out grow the condition. My pup did grow out of it shortly.

I had a dog that had them, there is a Med. you can getbut it is costly I had 2 different vets tell me to give him a asperen a day and to give him one before huntting him, he never had one when he waqs running a track but did have them at the tree, i was told that they where caused from taking a blow to the head he would fall out and his legs would go stiff and he would push out with his legs they told me to make sure he was not pushing against anything because he could break his legs, and the more he had the longer they would last, after about 3 years of him haveing them went out to fed one day and he had passed in the night do not know if he had one during the night or not.
seemed like when they first started he would only have them when he was excitted or worked up like they get when they are treed. I was always affraid he would have one when he was in swimming water but he never did. hope this helps

Thanks Rick and BuckBrush well this is a older dog that is haveing them she will be 8 first of march. She did have a bad head trauma back in September that is prolly the reason for it. Just wierd how it would come about now would have thought it would have come on earlier. As far as hunting them when there like that she will prolly be done all together.

I had a little bluetick beagle that had them. A friend of mine told me to give her sugar water or koolaid basically sugar, it worked never had another bad seizure. If we saw she was acting different we would give her some sugar she must have been diabetic. She lived until some punk kid hit her speeding down a country road. I don't know if yours is caused by something else, but it's worth a shot.

I've never had it in any of my hounds but I know someone who did...not sure if you remember ole Bill Zimmerman (RIP)...older guy that came over to Hewitt's hunts with me a few times....well anyways he had a hound that would get them and he took him in to the vet and had tests done and here his calsium (sorry I can't spell for nothing lol) levels was off so he had to start giving him pills everyday but he turned out fine so hard to say what it is....that's to bad about Cracker....you have anything going for the hunts? well take care

I've haven't figured out the answers on seizures. I've known dogs to have them. Some its hereditary, in fact I believe most of them it is. Others I've known it was not... or at least not known.
I have heard sometimes it is due to low blood sugars. I believe there are some supplements that can help prevent them.
I've known some breeders that have completely avoided certain lines of dogs because they are known to have "fitz" (seizures). From what I've learned about some dogs in the Walker breed, a very good percentage of them carry some dogs in their pedigrees that were known to suffer from seizures.

i have seen red dye in dog food cause seizures once the food was changed they never had another. reason i found this a buddy had three dogs and all three started having seizures i suggested the food and was right on the money he told this to his vet and the vet said i forgot about that one but had seen it a few times and food change worked in those cases also

A FRIEND OF MINE HAS A DOG THE VET TOLD HIM TO GIVE HIM A TEA SPOON OF HONEY BEFORE HUNTING HIM SO I WOULD GUESS IT S FROM HIS SUGAR DROPING DIDN T SHOW UP TILL AGE 10

Our good hunting buddy has a Walker male that has seizures, they don't occur very often and he has been to the vet for it. He experienced bad head trauma as a young hound and thats what is believed is the cause of them. He has been on Phenobarb (sp) for close to a year now. It does help, but he seems to have them when he is really excited or worked up, or has been treed for a really long time. When he got his first place win in October, he had a bad seizure after a dead tree fell and hit him in the back, he went on to tree three coons and scored 775+. That was the first one that he'd had in a really long time, and he hasn't had one since. We've found that the best thing you can do when he's hit with a seizure is to make sure that the dog can't hit anything if he's thrashing around, keep him cool, and kinda talk to him and let him know you're there. They can be scary.....I think the vet said that his would become more frequent with age and each one would span out longer. He's 5 years old now and has only had a handful of them. He is still hunted a good 3-5 nights a week and is happy and healthy otherwise.

I've seen dogs have seizures when they were being fed hi-protein dog food. Dropped back to a 21 or 22 percent protein and they would be fine. The cheaper the feed, the better they seemed to do. Also, I've put marshmellow cream or some other sugary substance in the dogs mouth during a seizure and seen them come out of the seizure quickly.

My dog started having seizures when he was eight years old, it was the dog food I am sure, the vet said at that age it was either something toxic to the body or a head injury, which didn't happen because he doesn't go out hunting or run where he is not watched, I know it was a toxin the food because i had another dog on that food get sick also, and a young dog that was on the same food and was healthy died and it all happened at the same time...but back to the seizures, I didn't put him on any meds, which phenobarbital would be the medicine they would most likely use, I just chose to watch and monitor his seizures and he doesn't have cluster seizures which are really hard on the heart, so when he is having a seizure all that you can do is talk to them and calm them down, just be careful not to get bitten during the seizure. Some seizures are sugar related and usually happen while you are hunting and giving them candy or honey will help. Germite's post explains things well also. Hope this helps.
