I had a vet tell me the same thing when I expressed serious grief over not being able to have the treatment done on a bulldog of mine several years ago. Of course....she didn't say use Ivormec....she wanted me to buy the heartworm pills they sell at the office. And she also said it would take two years for them to be completely gone, if I remember correctly. But it was along the same lines. Basically, if you put them on a heartworm preventative it will not kill adult worms but will keep more from growing, and the adults will die off, and then the dog will be heartworm free....as opposed to having a $300-$400+ treatment done. I haven't tried this either, because the dog I had got loose and disappeared shortly after that, but I think it might work also.
