A 4 yro dog that as a pup, showed no intrest in coon, and kept as a pet, could all of a sudden "get it"?
Now this dog was a PET for 4 years, and was never given the opp to hunt.
And if this dog did decide to hunt,and did well, what would you think of it? knowing that it was never given the opp before?

Give the dog a chance and see what the dog does. Some dogs are late bloomers. I dont think age matters as long as its got the want and will to tree coon it will be at least a pleasure dog.

thats my point though, what if it was never given a "fair shot" at being a coondog? what if the previous or current owner only kept it as a pet. And the current owner decided to try the dog on coon. and it took to it well. and this dog is a female?

we as breeders/hunters know that too many of the pups/dogs out there dont get "a fair shot".

So what if this dogs "fair shot" didnt come til it was 4?

would you hold it aginst the dog?

the age of 4 years old i would not waist my time on it just cull it and move on or give it to a pet home jmo david

Every dog deserves a chance no matter it be 2 years old or 7. If that dog has what it takes it will show it after a few times in the woods. Then you can make youre final assumption as to keeping it or culling it.

I wouldn't hold it against the dog and I believe it still could make it.

That dog may have been laying in the house for 4 years wishing it could go hunting. If you take her out and she hunts who is going to know or care if she was just a pet. I'll bet she handles real nice!

just show her a cage coon or a freshly killed coon and see what she does? Anything? If she is interested then take her along to the woods one night and see what happens. What could it hurt? Your not gonna know unless you try it. We had a hound that was never let out of his yard in town he was probably 3 or so. He took right to it.

I have a b&t that was on a chain for 3 years I got her and because of work another year went by. She is out of very good blood and has character that I love. When she sees fur she is a different dog its like she goes into a trans.you could not make her be aggressive toward another dog and she will not give up on a track. she has been put on coons and other than a possum caught in my tire feeder she only seems interested in coons.she has a long way to go before you could call her a coondog but she learns fast and if she makes it I like her overall better than allot of other dogs that are strait
