Went hunting last night with my boy, Stephen and a good buddy of mine and his boy, Jake. Jake has been wanting to go hunting with me and Bonnie forever and we finally got to put it all together. He has a young started dog that another buddy gave him a couple weeks ago, but so far he hasn't treed anything on the outside since kill season came in.
Bonnie treed right away and we flipped a coin before we even walked in to see which boy would get to shoot it out if we saw the coon. Jake won the coin toss and we walked in. There was the coon sitting in the v of the tree. It took 5 shots (the wind was blowing about 25 mph and the tree was moving about 8 ft), but he finalyy brought it out and when it hit the ground it was graveyard dead. I turned around and saw one of my favorite things, a kid smiling ear to ear!
Went on to tree 2 more times, but one had a lot of leaves on it and the other was a den, didn't see either coon.
I love taking kids and listening to them talk to each other anout what they've got to see and do in the woods and then see their excitement when the good things happen. It was a night we'll have to repeat again soon.
Preserve our sport and take a kid hunting!
