I have a year old dog that keeps turning over his water buckets and chewing them up. He has destroyed 2 of the 2 gallon rubber horse buckets so I switched to a 5 gallon plastic bucket. The weight of the 5 gallons of water has slowed him down with flipping it over, but he still manages to drag it to the middle of the pen with his teeth and then flip it over. I've tried tying buckets to the posts and he just works it until he gets the water out and chews it up. I've tried burrying the bucket and he just digs it up. I've even given him toys to play with thinking he would leave the bucket alone but it doesnt help. I thought maybe it was just boredom so I tried penning him with another dog, but he destroyed their bucket too. He also chewed the other dogs collar in half. I cant ever catch him in the act to discipline him. Anybody have any suggestions on how to stop this destructive behavior?

What kind of coon dog is he? You said he is a year old. Is he showing serious potential in the woods? He is awfully young yet. Maybe with regular hunting he'll stop that behavior. If not, I'd bury that sucker and move on. I can't stand a dog like that.

We have one now that is kinda like that. Not to that extreme. She's showing the tools to be a winner in the woods and that's what is keeping her alive. She's chewed all the shingles off 2 dog houses, chewed a collar off another dog in the kennel, chewed off leashes when left on in the dog box & etc. She is kennel quiet though but is constantly in and out of her box even when it is below zero.

She is a hard going hunting dog and from what I'm seeing it goes hand in hand. I have 2 dogs that are saints in the kennel with awesome dispositions but aren't nearly as hard of hunters as the 2 that are high strung in the kennel.

This young one we have has shown the tools that she could be a big winner, but I'll probably sell her because I won't use a dog like that in my breeding program regardless. Can't stand to feed and hunt a dog I don't like. Someone will probably end up with a nice dog simply because I don't like that fact that she chewed off a couple leashes in the dog box.

She has a couple months this spring to put it all together and hopefully grow out of it otherwise she'll be down the road.

had a young dog doing the same thing and the only thing that i found that worked was i got 4 steel fence post and drove them on all 4 sides of the bucket and then just sit the bucket in from the top and he want be able to get it out

Brogy: He is just getting started in the woods but is hunting hard and looking to be very independent. He runs around and barks at nothing in the pen periodically during the day so I think boredom has alot to do with his behavior. Hopefully once this snow stops and I can hunt him hard he will quit the destructive behavior.


Thanks for the ideas guys I may try using a metal bucket surrounded by posts.

Sounds similar to ours. Since she first started getting hauled to the woods she was independent. She never bothered to hang with a pup trainer. Hard hunter since Day 1.

Seems like thats the type of hounds getting bred these days. Hard tireless, independent hunters.... in trade we get some knuckleheads around the yard.

Our is it out of boredom as well, Dad gives her rawhide chews daily just to occupy her for awhile.

Bored or not, I expect my dogs to behave in the kennel. I'll sacrifice some ability for the sake of having a dog I can get along with.

I cut the bottom out of one bucket and chained it to the kennel and set the water bucket in that. It worked he hasnt done it since. Give him toys to chew up. Good Luck

I had a female like that, ton of natural ability and could destroy a water bucket, quick. I tied my bucket down and filled it full of bricks; slowed her down. She was bored. I started hunting her every night and she stopped destroying buckets. I have a daughter of hers that is the same way, as long as you keep her hunted, no problems. If you can't hunt her down; I'd suggest let her run loose or put her on a long cable, something to keep her active. Tom

If you're going to get metal buckets pay a couple of dollars more and get stainless. Most dogs hate putting their teeth on stainless. Get D-rings from Tractor Supply and clip them to the fence. I don't know if you get a lot of ice, but, the ice comes out of the stainless a lot better and can stand up to tapping the bucket upside down to get the ice out.
