Ear wounds bleed bad. Generally they look worse than they truly are. I would avoid all the blood stops and blood clot products, you don't need them and will do more harm than good. Wrap the injured portion of the ear so it lays flat with some gauze or other absorbent material and apply pressure until it stops. I am talking pressure that will make the dog almost wince. This will eventually stop the bleeding. If you add a bunch of junk to the ear, all you will do is make the dog shake its head to try and get it off and this will start the blood flow again. I have had ears split from the base to the tip and chunks torn completely off. Applying pressure stops the flow every time. Then you can determine if it needs stitches or staples and proceed accordingly. Try to avoid wrapping the ear for any length of time. If you apply any kind of antibiotic ointment, don't use the fancy triple stuff, avoid it if you can. A thin layer of vaseline to keep it moist until it scabs over good is all you need, if even that. Administer antibiotic orally or through the skin. Keep him crated if possible until it scabs over. Flies in the summer and cold temps in the winter will be miserable for him.
Why avoid the blood stop powders and triple antibiotic ointment?
We've been through a lot of cut ears, feet, legs, toenails, ect....Have always kept quick clot in the truck. Stops it fast....When ya get home, rinse it out, glue it up and slab some ointment on. Quick, easy, cheap and it heals up right.....
