You have or see a dog that will get struck quick on anything that makes a track, rabbits, deer, giraffes, elephants, lions, tigers, bears etc...etc covers all the other dogs quick when they find a coon track. Will run and tree its own coon when it comes across one. Eventually gets treed with a coon about everytime it is turned loose.

I know you can win in the hunts with it BUT,
DO YOU CALL THIS A COONDOG?

Would you recommend a dog like this to a friend that was looking for a nice coondog?

I would call it a coon dog. Theres alot of first strikes gotten that way. But I wouldn't recomend it to my friends. Theres nothing worse than a dog with big ears that leaves his track or tree to go cover another dog!! Thats the quickest way out of my kennel!!

if that was the onley kind of dog i had to hunt i would onley be taking my coler home if i could not not break it AND NO THAT IS JUST A COON HOUND NOT A COON DOG but rember the hunts is a game so you use the best kind of dog for some games,

Thats a far cry from a coon dog, but their are a lot of them in the hunts. We hunted against one a while back, left on a deer, finally ran across a coon track and got treed. Their was no doubt to a couple of us that he left on off game or was a automatic strike dog, but the handler was the judges buddy so questions fell on deaf ears.

Actually, ANY dog that gets under a coon everytime its turned loose will win most casts.

If you cut thru some of that it sounds like he does a decent job but needs a major trash breaking done on him. For me especially I'd want to break him from all that stuff I couldn't kill with a '22'.

Would we call that a coondog? Who cares what we call them. Either we like that kind of dog or we don't, doesn't matter what we call them. Fact is, very few know and most don't care what their dog gets struck on and if that dog is getting under a coon, they feel they got a coondog. And they are very happy.

I would call this dog "TRASHY" ! He might make one hell of a coondog if someone addresses his trash runnin problems. How are you gonna break him off of giraffes, tigers, and elephants? Maybe advertise him in Africa, they might pay big $$$ and then you could turn around and buy a really good, broke, coon treeing machine! All joking aside-- I wouldn't call him a coondog and I for sure wouldn't put a good friend on to him or that friend could become an enemy.

i myself dont mind my dog to strike on something as long as hes under a coon in a relative short amount of time. i dont care if hes riding a deer to the tree as long as he does fall off. Thats how, in my own opinion, most dogs come across a coon track. it guarentees they get struck and cover enough ground to have their end result.

I don't want a dog opening on anything but a coon. A real coondog don't fool with anything else. As far as comp. hunts go I wouldn't want to win because my dog struck first on trash. Its called coon hunting for a reason.

That is a coon dog seed. Plant it and see what comes up but don't call it a coon dog.
It isn't going to win in a comp. either if there isn't a good dog to call it to a tree. It is going to go ahead and tree that mouse or possom it opened on. Yep now you have first strike first tree on a possom. Might do good in thick coon were a good dog can call it off the trash but that is about the only time it will win.
Oh and your friends might get tired of hunting with that piece of crap. Then what are you going to do with out a good dog to pull it to a coon?
SHOOT IT PLANT IT AND SEE WHAT COMES UP. WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T BREED IT!!!!!!!!! JMO

I set a guy up with a dog like this now it drives me nuts to hunt with it so if your going to hunt with your friend ask yourself if you can hunt with him after he has this dog?

A fellar that his dog for a fact run a rabbit(Strike in on it) and and then will get treed with others and he will swear its a coon track he struck. But yet he calls it a coon dog breeds it for a coon dawg but for it to tree its own coon all by its self hes got more reason why it cant weather ,snow rain to dry . But if it were a hunt oh yea count him in . No I say it anit a coon dog yea cant hunt one night a week for an hour and expect anything but an excuse!!!!!!!!!!!

How old is this dog? Has there been any attempt to break him off of trash? It appears that his only problem is trash running. Break it down like this:
The Good:
1. Will back another dog with a coon
2. Will tree his own coon
3. Will get treed with a coon everytime he is cut loose
This equates to = he will get his own and some of yours too!!
The Bad:
1. Runs trash

I would find out how old the dog is, and if any attempt has been made to break him off of trash. If not, and he is young enough, it is entirely possible that with a little work you can get that out of him. If he is running trash because he knows no better, teach him. Most of these other dogs that people are talking about that don't run trash and they are calling "coondogs" had to be taught that at one point or another. They are called coonhounds, but are hunting dogs. You usually have to teach them what you want them to hunt.
If he is older, and attempts have been made to break him from running trash, I would not want him.

i would not put my friend on the dog because i would have to hunt with that trash running peace of junk.is that a dog,you want to start a young dog with.he may tree a coon but that don't make him a coondog.in my eyes a coondog is a dog you can send threw a herd of deer or any other off game in any condition on any terrain and his sole purpose is to go tree a coon and not run rabbit,deer or a whompusscat for an hour befor it finally runs up on a coon.if i want to deer hunt i am going to do that during the day with a 30-06.if i am going to rabbit hunt i am going to take my beagles and a shot gun during the day. if i am going coon hunting i am takeing my hound and a .22 at night.
