Yes-

I have 3 patents- Get yourself a Patent lawer and let them do it for you.
Alot of background work needs to be done to ensure you are not infringing on anouther patent and they know how to do this and they know all the terms and phrases to use to hurry the process.

Be careful. Some of these patent companies may say your idea is no good and then patent under another person's name. They say another person other than Bell actually invented the telephone but it is Bell telephone now. I have an idea for a better battery.

Whether or not if it would be worthwhile depends on the product. If it is something that can be circumvented by a certain percent, the thieves will figure out a way. In the case of some plastic products, they are automatically afforded a copyright. The copyright stems from plans/drawings injection molded tools are made from. Consider selling enough of the product to pay for your cost up front. One of the last items I designed was copied before I realized the initial cost of the product.

few years ago i came up with an idea, couple friends loved it so i made a phone call to the company and told them what i was thinking, they told me it was impossible and thanked me for the call, 2 years later the product is for sale to the public, GARMIN TRACKING SYSTEMS is the company. This is the truth, I wished i would have recorded the phone conversation, maybe this will help others out.

Patent-

All anyone needs to do is change anything just a little and they can get around anything you patent. Yes it is expensive. What you need to do is patent a PROCESS or IDEA. That way they cannot change the "machine" and be a competitor to your idea. This is a longer patent process but it is worth it.
