i have a young male black and tan just turn two, he stands on his head on some tracks, he will work a area to death. he can tree coons by him self and is avery good tree dog. i have hunted him with my female, she dosenot stand on her head if they hint a bad spot she will shut up and get the track on out of there and he is still hung up. will this dog get better with age or is just going to be the way he is.
has anyone ever seen purple patches on a coonhonds tounge.
and could this mean the dog is not full blooded.

no he is young. keep puting him the woods he will get better. the more u hunt him he'll go. and then look out lol

Tony, its a crap shoot on wether the young dog gets better with his tracking or not. He should improve in time, thats one of those practice makes better. Bout the tongue thing I doubt it means the hound isnt full stock. Actually not one of the black and tan bloodlines are completely full stock but your dog having a blue spot on its tongue doesnt mean its not fully bred. Good Luck with him

By the time a dog is two years old he sho uld have shown you what kind of a track dog he is; he may get to pulling up to your female in time ,which would help, but I'm afraid he is what he is. Tom

this dog turn two in december, last season and before season ever time i went to the woods this dog went, when october comes im in the woods three to four nites a week, when season opens its almost ever nite. last season he would go with the other dog and run track then stand on his head the other dog would go on he would pay no attention to them i go on to the tree knock the coon out he would still be back were i left him. then i started going back and getting him before going to the tree and send him on to the dogs treed, that helped him some. by himself he can be real bad. i have went to him when he is hung up and watch him work ever inch in an area no bigger than 50ft back and fourth, i have watched him ever smell ever log and stick in a log jam. what do ya do

If you've hunted him this much and he still does it , it may just be his style and hard to change. This type of dog is frustraiting and not my prefered style .. There may be a few nights when conditions favor him and he might tree some coons that other dogs miss , but thats about the only positive I can think of.

Everybody has their own favorite style , but I like one that will move it , or move on to new country. I never was very patient though. Good luck..

thanks guys for your help, i like a dog to move a track, this dog makes you want to pull your hair out. you work to get one going in hopes he is the one and two years is gone. i guess thats just part of training coondog. i think its time to move on.

I cant believe noone has said to put a stick on his rear end and make him get it on out. I have done this with a few that wanted to wallow too much, and it helped them. They probably will always do it to a certain degree, but why sit there and watch him beat it to death.

Log piles can hang up a young dog. I've set in the bow stand and watched coon crawl all over one and up and down trees around the pile. Makes a dog tear their hair out.

I would try taking the dog out early just at dark and hopefully get some easy tracks leaving the den tree.
