Why are their not more curs?

I have hunted for over 15 years with walker hounds. As for around here I didn't really get the chance to hunt with curs until a few years ago.

I decided after a few hunts with them I wanted to make the switch, and now thats all I have. My question is why are their not more curs as opposed to the hounds? Around east tn you will see atleast 10 hounds to 1 cur. Is it selective breeding and not mass production, do what's better for the breed and not worry about money. Or do people just not know better yet?

I think there are more cur hunters than you realize. Its just that most folks that hunt curs aint like the ones that hunt hounds. They dont drive around to every country store bragging up the dogs and all that garb. The folks that hunt curs, just hunt and keep to themsleves mostly.

I believe there are alot more out there than you think. I thought the same way until I started getting on some of the Squirrel dog sites and met alot of good people who lived close to me.
The Hounds probably do out number them ten to one but they are out there

Curs

There are more curs now than iv ever seen, the tighter hunting ranges have made the cur a more suitable type dog atleast for me they are. and i have found that some has very good noses also and open well on track. I personaly am probubly through with owning another Hound. unless somthing drasticly chainges in the world. cant stand most of what the hound world has now no ways .............

It's because curs don't make much noise.

You know treein game and stuff. LOL

just teasin you guys, but i know plenty of people in both hounds and curs who are blowhards.

There are getting to be more curs, and I think the trend will continue, if enough quality dogs are out there.

I know here in the east (Pennsylvania) not many folks heard of them years ago. Now a lot of people know the breed is out there. I have had them for about 7 years now and love them. The internet actually was a big help in getting the breed some attention, especially Squirrel Dog Central. I myself don't even visit Squirrel Haters much except to try to pick out something with information that isn't bickering or putting people down.

Yep, squirrel dog central is a good place to look if ya are interested in treein chows and rat terriers!

There is a lot of good info, and many more serious hunters on Sq Haters. they just call a spade, a spade.

I like folks who call it like it is. Different strokes, for different folks.

I think one of the reasons that folks don't know as much about curs are they are not competition hunted as much, and are certainly not advertised as much.

there is also a wide range of dogs that interest a ride range of hunters. When I first became interested in curs, I was very disenchanted to hunt with several dogs who hunted just a few hundred yards from ya, and treed very poorly. The folks that had them advertised alot, and seemed so satisfied with them, I felt there was no hope for any cur to make me happy.

I have since found a line that I like. they still are not the same, and can not be trained like a hound, that is what depresses many hunters. Curs require more work on average.

The pay-off in a pleasure dog makes it worth it. When folks hunt a truly good cur, they normally like them if they have an open mind. they are just a blast to hunt.

Mick,

What line of curs are you packing now? How are you getting along with the line you are hunting?

Take care,

Scott
