Coon hunting is supposed to be fun so any dog I own has to be a pleasure to hunt then I worry about competion hunting him! So I guess to answer your question a pleasure dog! Just my thoughts!

thats not true there are plenty of dogs that can tree a lot of coons but just cant seem to win anything. The COON dogs in my opinion are the pleasure dogs. I my self like the competition hunt and the types of dogs that i see win most of the time are not fun to take hunting with your friends and are a pain to hunt unless they are by their self. Pleasure dogs are exactly what their name is fun to take hunting, in every situation they may not be the fastest they may not have a good mouth or be a hard tree dog but most pleasure dogs are dogs that older men have and old men like to see coons in the trees they walk to

I have seen some competition dogs win with what most pleasure hunters would consider a fault. And I have seen some very good honest coon dogs that could never win a cast. So, there often is a difference.

These days, I am too old and fat to follow the modern "go yonder" competition style dogs. I like the old fashioned meat dogs that just get the job done. I will let someone else keep score on paper, I will do my score keeping with a .22.

Yes, Dave your statement is right. However, I believe whole heartedly that a good pleasure hound can win in competition and that a good competition hound is a pleasure to hunt. In my book if a dog doesn't have the tools to handle both it has faults I can't live with.

You can have both but I haven't seen a lot of them. Here in the "land of the coons" it seems the comp dogs that win are tight mouthed and some will never tree with another dog so they blow out. For pleasure hunting I want to hear a chase then tree with a good mouth. Had a buddy come down too run and we hunted 2 hrs and treed 10X and never once together with the 2 dogs. Now I don't know if that is pleasure hunting style or not.

The "difference" between a so called competition dog and a so called pleasure dog is which faults you are willing to tolerate!

So often the "first strike" dog that gets tagged as "competition" is a babbling idiot that makes multiple slick trees for every coon it trees. It sets in the pen until the leaves come on...cause he who makes the most trees wins, and if you can be packing first strike...you are "almost unbeatable"... Both of those are serious faults, yet we use the hunt wins as breeding selection criteria.

Often the dog that locates, moves on...locates again...circles the tree takes FAR too long to get treed is labeled a "pleasure dog". This same dog often runs a track back and forth, or cant really move a track out but instead straddles the track, making lots of noise, but with very little forward progress. Oh it eventually gets treed, and nearly always has a coon, but would never "compete with a dog that can move tracks and is a quick locator.

Both dogs have serious faults that make them unsuitable for individual activities....be it pleasure or competition.

The really GOOD dogs are both a pleasure to hunt in the hunts, cause they tree coon, do so in a manner that is quick, and consistent.

If I could show you a dog that is a Grand Night in multiple registries, and never needs a lead strap, can be called across the creek, out of the swamp but has a coon when he trees would you consider that as a pleasure dog or a competition dog? If that same dog could be used in the highest levels of competition on the weekend, but be used to train pups the rest of the week, which category would you put that dog in?

The biggest question is which set of "faults" are you more prone to accept?

When it gets to the point the dog that trees coons quickly and efficiently for me during the week doesn't stand a chance on a comp. hunt cast is when I will no longer comp. hunt. For right now, they are the same dog, for me.

I can see end coming. The way the rules are tweaked to reward a certain kind of dog, shrinking hunting areas, anti hunter pressure and other factors may move coonhunting to a pen before its shut down completely.

A good honest coondog can win his share af casts at the local clubs, but the kind of hound that can win with the big boys at the world hunts is a different critter completly. Not to sure i could stand having to hunt that dog during the week. Ill probably never know.

Pleasure is another name for loser.

If one can compete but can't win then he has a pleasure dog.

A top comp. dog needs to get his mouth open quick and keep it open till treed. A coondog opens only when he smells coon.
A top comp. dog goes till he gets treed and never checks in. A coondog hunts the area and if no track is found he checks in so the hunter can move. A top comp. dog locates and locks down so he can be called quick. A coondog locates and checks to see if the coon moved on and is accurate when he trees. A top comp. dog doesnt mess with anything but a hot track and scores fast. A coondog takes his tracks as he comes to them and finishes what he starts.
Now you folks that say you have both please tell me HOW.

Agreed. Seeing a good comp. dog is pretty impressive though given the rules they have to function in.

Depends on what you like as a pleasure dog. For pleasure I want one that can work an old track and find the end of it.
Witch one is better for what? The die hard tracker will show you a coon about any were you drop it. Not going to win a foot race at a hunt though..............A fast moveing hot trail dog I think would win most of the hunts though.........
If the government went broke and I had to feed my familey with one I would take the one that will work a cold track to the end. Meat in the woods will get thin. Going out in the conditions around here right now I would take a fast trail dog to get the most in the least amount of time. (comp.)

By the way if the government went broke and we were hunting for meat I would want it to tree anything and everything it could find too. Not just coon.
