coon scents

Are there some better coon scents? Some don't seem to great. I want to scent some old coon hides for pups when I cant get a fresh dead coon. What brand do you use. Are all of them real scent or artifical scent? Thanks for any ideas.

I've tried scents.I've tried hide and body drags.IMO nothing leaves a trail like a real coon except a real coon.Get yourself a boxtrap and can of sardines.

putting a hide in a pup pen

some hunters put a dead coon in the pup pen for them to get aquainted with. I can only do that for a few hours in this heat for now. We get about 50 coon trapped for us from local farmers and just set them loose on our hunting grounds, so letting one loose for the pups to trail/train is no problem. But I would like to have some scent around when we have no live coon. WHAT IS COON SCENT MADE FROM? IS IT COON URINE OR WHAT? I dont like to 'tease' a hound too much with a live coon where he can see it. Just want ihim to get used to the smell.

Kim,

I dont know anything about scents I never use them, but as for leaving a dead coon in the pen with the pups.I wouldnt do that. I use the same method to breake my dogs from possums. They get so use to it that it does'nt get them fired up anymore.IMO

I have never used scents, but a friend had some and I thought I would see what a finished hound thought of this "scent"....

I believe I could get better results if I peed in the bottle myself....

If you wand some coon scent, I use the grass and trash they pull into a live trap when caught...

field trials and coon scents

what I have also observed with coon scents is even when they are used in feild trials most of the hounds that know the trail and where the tree is don't need it. They know where to go and what to do with there nose up. Kinda hard for a new hound to beat those hounds. Now I bet if you change the trail and tree those hounds will HAVE to use there nose to work and find the tree. Then we will see if the coon scent works. LOL Now when hunting we also find some of the good treedogs when the coon is shot out that one bite or two and then they are ready to go off to find another. Then we have some that won't let go of Mr. coon Kinda have to snap them up and walk them till they let go. They get tired of carrying around Mr coon.
