What a night...LAND OWNER....

I went last night turned loose around 8:30(breezy but not TO cold, guess Im getting use to it)Gold Dust went in and had him up in 15 min or so,he never really opened but when he treed he gave a nice locate(which he rarely does except on a hot track)but I'm learning that when he does he has him for SURE,on the way to him I called fmoore to brag because he called me about 30 min EARLIER and they were already headed to there first tree!!!Anyway got to him plus'em just petted him up and left(I think I'm done bringing them down for the season)loaded him up and drove ACROSS THE FIELD to the next patch of woods and turned him waited...waited..waited then I got my walk on and found him about 900 yrds up in a joining patch of woods on a leaning tree going into a bushy cedar high up(I HATE THOSE I MEAN HATE THEM)didn't really shine the tree cause as I got there I saw headlights coming(oh lord LAND OWNER?)snap the dog up and met him at the tree line before he could started asking questions I apologized if my dog woke him or something and told him my dog had got out of pocket and I was just coming to get him and leave,he said he heard him and knew it was a coonhound,he asked me my name and just when I thought the cussing and promise to killing would start lol he cut off the truck and started telling me about how his uncle use to take him hunting when he was a boy 30 min later!!!! Lol he asked me did he have him and why I didn't shoot him I said I didn't bother to look cause I saw him coming and didn't bring my gun(I had laid my gun down it looks a little better when they come)...well he hopped out and said let's go see and got a BIG gun out the back didn't know the size but I KNOW it wasn't a 22 lol, well we got back and looked and I saw the eyes, showed him and POOOWWWW!!! I think I jumped more than GDust lol out fell what was left of a coon(DEER HUNTERS)we got back and he gave me a card with his # and told me I could hunt his grandmas 500 + acres anytime and to give him a call sometime so he can go...I thanked him and he left(go figure)I will call him today and thank him again cause it could have went the other WAY and that was a BIG GUN lol but after this I called it a night!TREE MY DOG!!!

WOW were you sippin the JUICE last night LOL That seldom happens. Yes,Definatly give this fella a call and i'm sure if he has that spot that just might lead to another spot or 2...I went out and got more bedding last night and cleaned the boxes out and added new straw.an hour later i went out and both dogs were not coming out so i decided to take the night off . I have been hunting 4 nights a week in this weather and its brutal. With the wind and cold.I've never used my tracker more then this year.... Good luck to You and Gold Dust.

now that is a good story, i'm glad it turned out good for you. also it probably has a lot to do with you being a good man.....
that doesnt happen a lot nowadays, landowners seem to be stingier than years past and part of that can be due to unscrupulous hunters renegading their land....

Glad it turned out ok, but.........

As you said in your post, you drove over to the other patch. Evidently you did not have permission to be on the property. This is exactly why we coonhunters get a bad name, and tick off property owners. Your right, it easily could have went the other way, and you could have a dead dog, or ended up with a tresspassing ticket.
Remember, in this case, its ALWAYS best to ask permission rather than forgiveness.

That right there

is awesome for that to happen like that. Most of the time it is a bad deal when land owners come out but there are still a few good people left just hard to find. Glad you got the meat and glad you got you some more hunting land need all you can get these days. Take care and Happy Hunting.

Man what are you talking bout!!! I drove over to the other patch of woods across the field cause I didn't shoot the coon down and it was so quick that I wanted to turn him again and I didn't want him messing with that tree being that he's getting use to the fur in his mouth and probably would wanna go back which is one of his touchy areas if you must no,so I just loaded him and drove over instead of walkin across the field(Johnny Chapman taught me about that since u must know every detail)and for the record I was on land that I have permission to hunt and have hunted for 2 yrs now(with no problems ever),so next time u decided to analyze something make sure you have ALL the details lil buddy, have a nice day.TREE MY DOG!!!!

MR.Baker

The land was joining the land that I was hunting, haven't you dog ever got to deep?Maybe today I'll go down there and put out a feeder bucket and tape the areas I have permission to hunt on,maybe that will solve all of this....not mad at all with you just didn't like how you jumped to a conclusion and put me in the wrong like that,if u come to Orangeburg look me up coco on me.

Good to hear Darkman. It's always nice to encounter some "friendlys".

Personally, if my dog gets over near somewhere it shouldn't be, I too am going to get in my truck and drive the road as close as I can and then walk in as quickly as possible to go retrieve my hound. Unless I feel my hound has already alerted the owner and I see activity at the home, I'm not going to disturb anyone. Here in MN we have the right to go in on foot, unarmed and retrieve our hounds. That's exactly what I do. I have found that 80% of time when I've knocked on a door or called someone to let them know my dog is in there, they had no idea and just tell me to go get my dog.

Im not so sure about that, actually I would say its the other way around. Most people dont care much around here, unless its deer season....Your more apt to make someone mad knocking on their door late at night than just discretely getting your dog.

Darkman

You seem to be way too upset. I was making a point, and still will. You may have driven over, but again you said a patch woods. Why hunt a "patch woods" when you know your bordering an area you dont have permission? And, why are you carrying your gun onto land you dont have permission? Again, its things like this that give us all a bad name.
And yes, I have had dogs get out of pocket onto posted land. But, if I know I am crossing onto land without permission, I follow the law, leave the gun behind and go "retrieve" my dog.
I'm not trying to bash you personally, but to make a point to the new hunter, and the "antis" who read this board, that most of us do it right.
Good luck to you next time.

Ok Mr.Baker your staring to get on my last with these POINTS!!!!(Taken a deeeeep breath)1st we must define a PATCH,but you really can't because its a individual determination of something, for instance if you have 10 dogs, some might say you have ALOT of dogs were as others would say you. Only have a FEW dogs,so my point is your PATCH of woods might not be the size of my PATCH of woods.(Taken another deeeeep breath)I said that I had to get "MY WALK ON" meaning I had to walk a ways to search for him so its evident that I did not know the "where abouts" of the dog if I did maybe I would have drove around you see,now as for the gun SORRY but I'm not leaving my gun on a tree once I realize I'm out of pocket, cause we have YOTES and I just wouldn't feel good bringing a 21v light to a yote fight get it,I drop the gun just for the simple fact guns put people on edge in situations like that. Now your right I broke the law(can't get around that one)but in the words of FOREST GUMP"mama said it aint nothin wrong wit telling a lil white lie, they don't hurt nobody" lol ....TREE MY DOG!!!

Chris, while your points may be valid in other instances I believe you have misunderstood the origional post.

He was on a large piece of land which had two different drops on the same landowner. Rather than walk him across the field he put the dog in the truck and made his second drop on a place that he had permission to hunt on, he just chose to drive across the field to do it to keep the dogs mind OFF the coon he just treed and ON going and getting another coon treed, but he had permission to be there (and it reads like it was all on the same landowners property).

Then after waiting a long time he walked in the woods and only after going in a long ways he heard his dog. He is still on property he has premission to hunt on at this time. He went and got the dog and the dog was deep and actually across the property line so he just got him without even shining the tree, and came back out. To have "left his gun" he would have had to leave it in the middle of the woods somewhere. Leaving a gun sitting out in the woods is a good way to never see that gun again. I guess he could have walked all the way back out and put the gun in the truck and then walked all the way back in, but that would have at least doubled the time his dog was out of pocket.

Either you or me one misread his origional post. The way I read it he did nothing wrong and was very courteous.

I would think that all of the land we have permission to hunt would border land that we don't.
