the same thing you would do to a kid thats backtalking his parents,,correct it before it gets out of hand...my grandmother used to use a willow switch on our buts when we acted up,,maple tree switchs work as well ,,lead straps ,,whatever is handy when the dog acts up,,stop it before it gets out of hand...

I second that and the better you do it the fewer times you will have to and the less likely you will have to shoot the dog in the head latter.

maybe exposing the pup around a lot of differnt places
and dogs.start feed it with dogs, riding with other dogs.
people cause more dog fights by yelling and scream at
them than dogs.

you can cause a pup to have an attitude by exposing him to too many dogs in the timber at too young an age...kinda like a kid that is bounced from school to school to school, they experience all different types of attitudes in other dogs, they become unsure of what to expect and nervous, and it can give them a chip on the shoulder...just gotta watch them....

A lot of times a young dog that doesn't know what it is doing at the tree just gets to face barking out of excitement. For that I slap the side of the face the other dog is on (hard) but if it bites I will whoop the crap out of it.
Then before I have the problem again I teach it what every body is bawling at when treeing. Just becouse they show up and bawl doesn't mean they know why they are there.
Tie it up close to the tree and squawl one out and make sure the pup sees it walk down that trunk. Won't take many if that is the problem get it's agression focused in the right place.

Oh one more thing you can do that is a little risky depending on how hard the pup is and how old but if it can handle it. You can get a coon bawled up on it's head and let another dog go to pull it off. It will learn to fight together instead of each other. Just kind of have to know the pup to know for sure why it is doing it and what to do about it. Good luck.

I try to never let it go without some kind of reaction from me to let a pup know they're doing something wrong. Might yell at a small pup or slap him with my cap. If it gets worst so do I.
I've seen many young dogs on a cage with others stand back wondering whats going on and then jump in on the dog closest to them like they think it's a dog fight and figure they should get in on it. No idea whats going on but usually figure it out shortly from that point.

Im not talking about hunting with other dogs. Just when he meets other dogs. After he gets to know them he is OK. Thanks, WES

Is he growling because he's scared, or because he's acting aggressive or dominant? How old is he?
The answers to those questions could be important in determining how you'd want to work with a pup like that.

it doesnt really matter why its growling you just need to stop it as soon asit starts i have a grumpy old female that will teach a pup not to growl she won't hurt it but will pin it down a few times till it doesn't growl any longer

You would switch a 3 month old pup that was growling because it was afraid of a strange adult dog?
And since a pup like that won't be in another dog's face unless it has nowhere to get away, your grumpy female would go after it and pin it down?

Now if this guy is talking about a 14 month old testosterone-driven young male getting in other dogs' faces, then yeah it definitely needs to learn some manners.
That's most likely the case or the question would have probably been worded very differently, but those details are missing.

Yep that is the best thing to happen in most cases. It is the natural way to take it out of a pup. I have a 7 weak old walker and my 6 year old ridgeback has put it in it's place a couple times. Has worked wonders but she will still run around him bawling at him part of the time. Doesn't take much from him to discurage it now though. He would bite her in half if he thought I would allow it.
When they get taken away from the litter before they learn respect for the litter mates you have to improvise. She was 4 weaks 3 days when I got her. The ridgeback was 4 weaks.

i made that mistake ONE TIME when dad sent me to the tree,,my brother went to the tree for the 2nd switch ,and dad made the coment that if it wasn't big enough he would get the 3rd switch and both of us would get a switching..i swear my brother brought back a tree limb instead of a switch,,that i think was the last time i retreaved too small a switch...

Calblu u nailed it. The pup is only 3.5 months old and it was just taken away from the litter. Its not growling out of aggression. I think its scared cause it will tuck its tail when growling. Once it sniffs the other dog a little bit then its fine with the other dog[s]This only happens at first and only for a second when they first meet, then its fine. Thanks, WES
