Man I don't know about the rest of you guys but, this season went under the snow. I had a real late harvest here so my hide season ended with only 10 times out and 2 I wish I would have stayed home. I wish this state would open their eyes and change the dates. I my oppion they gave us 3 months and 2 of them are the worste months out of the year to legally shot coon. Heck I even bought shoe shoes this year so I would have a chance. But I never thought I needed to buy the dog a pair to.
I'm hoping to make a couple trips down south when their weather turns that way so I can get a jump on hunting. What is every one else doing other then watching the snow fly?

Sounds to me he's saying the snows so deep the dogs are breaking through and can hardly get around to hunt. If you get enough crust on the snow so the dog runs more or less on top it will work better. I never figured the coon moved good in deep soft snow either. The old fat ones can lay up when they want to. Some young coon go into the winter still growing and have to move more than the old ones. When breeding time comes they move or we wouldn't have any coon. Big difference in a foot of snow compared to two feet or more unless it's hard enough to run on top.

Got to hunt about 3 weeks. Really stinks. 16 inches of snow. Same thing last year and 2007 was the ice storm. Ought to open October 1st. Don,t know why DNR would care if we shoot a few more $2.00 coon.

We have plenty of good hunting really. Usually don't get too hot until late June early July. Not too cold until late December. I figure we have nice hunting weather about 8 months out of 12. Just wish they shut down some of these deer seasons they are way out of control.

Just give it a couple nites after fresh snowfall, coon will be moving again even if the snow is deep.

i'll have to agree the iowa coon season is about 2 or 3 weeks an your done . with all the deer season's i hate to turn a dog loose even if i hate the dog i sure wouldnt want some deer hunter to shoot it. i really do think the dnr needs to cut back on the deer seasons an the limit the number of deer a person can kill. i have seen several guys kill alot of doe's at 12 dollors a deer it sure dosnt make sence to me but them guys killing the does sure get alot of cheap meat. the thing that really makes me mad is the guys that kill alot of does in jan. but there really big bucks that have lost there rack an some of them guys kill does that are smaller than a big walker or lab. i quess if thats what deer hunting is about now days i'll just stay with hunting coons . jmo

Lets face the fact coons aren't wearth a dime. Lets do it like other states do. Put a dayly limit on coon year around. If the ecomony don't get any better we will eating them like some those guys in the south. (I don't see myself getting that hungrey) The trapping world has slowed way down. And to you guys that trap do the math it has to be out of true enjoyment. I haven't sold a coon in 2 years why I'm lazy and I don't have time to chase fur peddlers around. And I have a frig full of them greasie hides. But, don't get me wrong I enjoy shooting coon. And the bregging rights is nice. And I havn't missed a opening night in 24 years ever. Fur in my dogs mouth is better then money in my pocket I always say.
Oh Chad I know where you are when the snow starts fling. I don't have a problem walking snow. All I can say if you can keep up lets go. All night long. lolol

If the snow is not deep jan is the best month in iowa to hunt. The coon are ruting and moveing good. A guy just needs a good track dog or a good layup dog and u can tree alot of coon.

I get what he's saying. We're in a similiar situation here in NH (not with the snow but the crappy timing). It opens here in September. Why shoot a coon that's still wearing it's summer fur? October is nice but the coon still dont have their prime fur on. November you'll see some nice fur but it's deer season...after that it's a crap shoot as far as how much snow we'll have. Luckily, it's good hunting now with only about 4 to 5 inches of snow on the ground...last year it was a lot worse.

My heart goes out to you all!
I was think about how I would get around if we had weather like you guys do just the other day.

Even to practice on the bench and work on ground training. I am sure you have to work harder AND longer just to get a good day in when you can.

Heck it's spring down there now to us. Winters been mild here so far with just a little snow and not super cold so far. Water dishs are frozen but so's yesterdays groceries so it kinda balances out. I think you guys from the south have visions of us fighting our way to work thru huge snow drifts and it does happen but usually it snows and they plow the roads with a little salt and we're good til the next one. Little slippery now and then but the northern states have quite an investment in snow removeal equipment. With the economy so bad their not being so quick to use it so they can save some fuel and overtime costs.

I deer hunt every year for one reason........MEAT not racks. Ive seen a LOT of good coon hunting ground go to the rack hunters!
Sad thing is, Ill bet most coon hunters have seen bucks that would make the hard core deer hunter crap his pants! And walk rite past them! I know I have! These "deer hunters" should go coon hunting sometime. The might learn somthing about coon hunting and deer hunting.

Deer season doesn't bother me much. Where I'm at everything gets deer hunted, and I can coon hunt it all too. What irritates me is the deer hunters claiming I ruined their hunt for them by running a dog the night before. I can watch my dogs or walk real close to deer bedding down nearly every night I go, and rarely does it bother the deer a bit. There's enough deer around to let a coon hunter shoot 1 to every 10 coon, and help save the cars driving by.

I know another guy that had a golf ball in a sock in his shop waiting for hail storms to come around. I don't think he ever used it, but always said if times get tough enough... LOL!

The Iowa DNR is ridiculous with the game laws on deer. They sure do charge a pretty penny if someone "poaches" one. If that same deer came through a windshield and killed someone though it is not their deer then! My friend almost died from a big doe entering her Toyota Camry a couple years ago via windshield.
