I've only ever met one dog owner who had a legitimate reason for this... he had tried every kind of food container (paper, plastic, rubber, metal) and the dog ATE every kind! His teeth were horrible and at 3 years old most were broken, cracked, or missing. I was working for a vet then and we saw the dog twice in about 8 months to surgically remove things from his stomach.

So he started feeding him on the ground and kept EVERYTHING out of his kennel!

Ground feeder

I have a friend that's a fox hunter and he feeds his dogs off of the ground. He does because he's feeding about 20 dogs. I guess he figures he's giving all the dogs an opportunity to eat.

I feed on the ground..? They're eating large pieces of raw meat and they'll just drag it out of the bowls anyway... so I toss it in the yard to save them the trouble. I worm 'em once a month anyhow. I'm confused though as to why people that would feed their dogs on the ground "must not care much for their dogs"? I've seen enough dogs throw/knock over dishes anyway... and dogs don't seem to mind dirt... heck one of mine eats poop she's not terribly picky.

Autumn...

He had a REALLY COOL watering system! After going through about EVERY thing known to man for watering a pet, he went to an external watering system where the pipe ran along the front of all the kennels. Each kennel had a metal water spout going into the cages where the dogs could get water by licking the spout. Picture a really big rabbit watering system. This guy was a professional handler and trainer of german shepherds and rotties for special purposes (protection, cops, drug task force, etc.)

Personally, I don't know of another good reason to feed a dog off the ground. Yeah, they eat things off the ground, spill their food, and lick their butts (which have to be as dirty as the ground right?) but I don't think that is reason enough to not provide a bowl. I mean, will the $3 really break you up that much?

And yes, nearly all pups are born with or pick up worms within the first 2 weeks of life. That's just a normal natural event. Regardless of if the mother is worm free or not. That is why litters should be regularly wormed for good health.

i dont feed my dogs off the ground, but i did once, because i have a Rott (who acts like pup) and i had just gotten a young female. some how they figured out a way to play tug-of-war with the food dishes, i now have 4 metal food dishes, one of which as a metal garbage can lid screwed to the bottom so that my female cant lift it up and carry it everywhere, like she feels the need to do.

i do know a few people that feed off the ground, i dont understand it be he say the same thing as EerieEyes, he feeds meat, cow parts to be exact, they feed old cows or down cows or whatever. and says it's pointless to get dishes when they just drag the meat around anyways

i had a labrador that would tear apart anything you fed him out of so i made a square box set his water pail and food dish in it and poured concrete aroun them inside the box i oiled the pail and the dish with old motor oil and slid the pail and dish out of the concrete when the concrete was dry that ended the problem he could n't get to the pail or dish when they were put in the concrete just take the handle off the pail so they can't pull it out

we put the feed in the bowls but some of them mostly certain bloodlines ,will flip the pans /bowls/buckets and eat it off the ground,,if they cant flip it they will use their paw to rake it out onto the ground ,have seen a couple grab a mouthful and take it and drop it on the ground and then eat it..not long ago i noticed our jack russel droping her feed on the carpet and then eating it 1 peace at a time after i steped on a peace in my bare feet she hadnt got yet..

what makes them do that??is it the wild dog instink showing up after years of pure bred breeding??

maybe some people give in to the dog and say if you want to eat it off the ground then thats the way you'll get it..

we had a shepard and dalmation dog that would eat their wooden box's and rubber bowls up like candy,,had to go to hard plastic barrels and plastic buckets,,they ate the first couple buckets up then left them alone...pop cans, metal buckets, ect didnt last long for those too if they could get ahold of them..

again what makes a dog want to do that???

again

One of the reasons for feeding off the ground (elevated food pan) is to minimize the chances of Bloat or Gatric Distortion. Certain strains of our breed are susceptiple to it.
