suggestion to keep hunt #s up at ukc hunts

folks stop going to hunts when they arent fun anymore, and the easiest way to have a bad time at a hunt is to be on a bad cast. imo, the best way to avoid having a bad cast is to have a good confindant, and honest judge. i think ukc should take steps to having better judging at the hunts, it would beneficial to all.

one way i was thinking of is to a have a "certified judge" designation. you have to pass a test similar to the master of hounds. those with this designation would take prioroty as being the judge when drawed out on a cast. one thing that frustrates the heck out of me is to go to a club and them hand the scorecard to someone that doesnt really know the rules just cause he is a local when they have other very experienced individuals on the cast that should be judging.

just a thought, but after being around the hunts a decent bit, reading posts on here, and having some inadvertantly poor judging this weekend happen on a cast, just feel like we need to be doing all we can to have as many qualified judges as possible and making sure that they have the card in their hands. this would make the hunts so much more pleasurable and i think you would see a benefit in the long run in hunt numbers if done correctly

I think another thing that would help and some may do it is camping. A lot of the big hunts people camp. If they could leave the wife and kids at the camp to have fun with others then come back after the hunt and burn a hot dog over a fire it would be fun and get the kids involved. Wouldn't have that long dangerous drive home late at night either and you would get to know the people you are hunting with a little. Might even have a preacher come for a little Sunday morning service before you go.

Shorten the hunt time to an hour. Everybody can go home sooner. The guides wont have to start pulling places out of their hats. You can hunt closer to the club.

How many times did the dog that was ahead at the end of the first hour not win the hunt?

Most of the time the fighting and fussing starts in the second hour when they are loosing.

rance, I couldn't agree more that poor judgeing is too prominate in UKC hunts. However I just don't think the "certified judge" thing is practical. I don't think it would give you enough judges to cover the average hunt. Keep in mind atleast 25% of the entries must judge.
I'm convince the biggest improvement could be made by following UKC's suggested method for assigning judges which is to pick a minimum of 1 judge for every 4 entries BEFORE drawing any dogs. Draw judges at random and then guides and then fill the remainder of the casts at random. This is opposed to drawing casts, THEN going back and picking a judge from 4 entries of which quite possibly none are qualified. Very few, if any of the clubs in this area follow UKC's suggest procedure for assigning judges. My own club doesn't. It wouldn't solve the problem entirely but it would be a huge improvement.

I would say that is a heck of a good idea. I don't kow how the judges would like it. At our club a lot of the guys don't want to judge becouse of ( well you know). I wonder if it would work for guides too.

JIM HOW MANY CLUBS DO THIS?
99% OF THE CLUBS WILL TAKE THEIR GUIDES AND MAKE THEM THE JUDGE.
MOST OF YOUR GUIDES ARE NOT QUALIFIED TO JUDGE.

The guys that are good judges are judging, the problem is there isnt enough to go around.

The best casts are the ones where EVERONE knows the rules, not just the judge.

i was at a hunt nit to long ago and when they where calling the cast out the HD said I will tell you who is going to judge when you come up to get your score card and that is what he did as the cast members would walk up he would look at them and just hand one of them the card, I know the judges are suppose to be picked before the cast are drawed but a lot of clubs do not do it that way.

ANOTHER THING THAT WOULD HELP

THERE ARE ALOT OF NEW PEOPLE BOTH YOUNG AND OLD STARTING TO COMP HUNT. THE CLUBS NEED TO CONSIDER AWARDS OF SOME KIND. THESE KIDS WOULD LIKE TO WIN SOMETHING BESIDES A YELLOW SLIP OF PAPER. CLUBS COULD BUY A DIGI CAMERA AND PRINTER AND SOME PLAQUES SNAP THE PHOTOS AND PRINT THEM WILL THE PAPER WORK IS BEIN DONE AND SLIP THEM IN A PLAQUE. KINDA COOL TO LOOK BACK AND REMEMBER THE WINS ON THEIR DOGS AND WOULD BE CHEAPER FOR THE CLUBS IN THE LONG RUN THAN SETS OF TROPHYS. I'VE HEARD THIS ALOT AROUND MY AREA AS THER ARE A BUNCH OF KIDS GETTING INTO THE DOGS HERE AROUND ELIZABETH IL. <v>
