why do you run coon hounds

just wanted to know why people run coon hounds, because a lot of post on here are all about bashing someone else's hound's!
me myself l love running them because l meet great people and love my dog's even if they never make world champs plus all the neat things you see at night, and it is a sport you do by yourself or with other's , l think people need to sit back and remeber why they started running hounds in the first place! just my 2 cents!

I do agree on why did you ever start coon hunting,it was a lot of fun and sometimes I wish I had that same desire I had back then. But some people bash other people for the fun of it,and really don't mean any thing by it.And sometimes some people bash other breeds because they are stupid!LOL!!

l have hunted with all diferent breeds injoyed hunting with all of them its just some of the handler's l did not like because they think they are better than everyone else , and forget when they started they knew nothing till some nice person help them understand what the hounds were doing, and all this talk about first and first dogs is getting a little boring if we got all those hounds together would they all bark at same time and tree at same time? that would be cool to see!

Respect All That Enjoy Our Sport

I run hounds for the for the love of working with a hound and seeing and hearing the reults of that effort when I turn them lose. Nothing beats a hard chase on a crisp Novemeber night and hearing them treed off in the distance I respect all that pursue hounds on any type of game. Any hound can be an idiot on a given day. We all have a common interest we enjoy and should respect each other. With the electronic age it is soooooo neat to talk to folks all over North America. In these challenging times we need to keep together and represent out sport as a respectfull group.

I got started coonhunting about the time I could walk. My grandfather and my father both are coonhunters. I enjoy coonhunting because anyone can go. My grandfather is 78 yrs old and this year we took my 4yr old daughter hunting for the first time. Thats right, one night back in November we put 4 generations of coonhunters in the woods. It is great fellowship and a chance at family time. Especially in a time when most kids are running around trying to find something to do other hang out with their parents.

i started because my grandfather used to tell me stories of him coon huntin as a kid and young man back in the 30's and 40's
i enjoyed the stories and wanted to try for myself.he was too old to take me and he didnt have a dog anymore,so i was in my teens by the time got a dog,he helped me train it by telling me everything he knew but was never able to go with me before he passed.

Never ask a man what kind of dog he has. If he has a hound he'll tell you, if he does not, you don't want to shame him by asking.

My grandfather is the same way as cedarhillkennel's was. He is now 89 years old but he tells the best stories of coon hunting back in the day when it wasn't so political or competitive. I pleasure hunt too but it is hard to find someone that just wants to hit the night woods for fun. Got started because I heard all those stories and grew up listening to Jerry Clower from my dad's records. (smile) Still love listening to them too! First actual coon hunt was with some buddies from the mountains. I always thought I would like it and when that first hound opened I was hooked! I love listening to the dogs do what they love to do.

Well we certainly don't do it to get rich off selling coon hides! LOL! We just enjoy listening to the dogs and hanging out with our buddies (even if they are full of hot air!). Its the one time we can hunt without feeling gulity. We farm and always have a huge to-list so if we are hunting when we could be working on a chore list we feel guilty. At night all we are doing is sitting on the couch! We love seeing the dogs get so excited when we walk out of the house at night. They know whats comin!

ratdaddy took the words right out of my mouth!! I didn't know
any coonhunters when I was young, just had this feeling I
needed a hound. 26 years later I have the same feeling and
it's cost me a couple wives already. Trying to keep the third
one so I've had to back off a little but it kills me.

I love runnin my coondogs just cuz it gets me away from everything. its just me and my dogs in the middle of the woods. theres just somethin about it that puts you in that peaceful state. and theres nothing better than hearin your dog strike, trail and tree. and i know what you mean about ppl always talking bad about your dogs. i get it all the time. i worked my way up from the little blond with the plotts to that girl with them brindle coondogs. lol. im workin on it, adn the more i hunt and the better my dogs get, the more respect im getting. lol

Coonhunting is my crack cocaine. When I can't go I pace the house and beat on computers and spend too much time on commercials checking what I already know is in the frig. Just like right now. My knee is bouncing and I'm starting to get edgy because the weather is horrible AND THE WALLS ARE CLOSING IN ON ME. PLEASE LET THE SUN SHINE SOMETIME THIS WEEK AND MELT SOME SNOW SO I CAN PURGE THIS URGE!!!!!!!!

I agree with Joe. No one started hunting cause they were going to be rich and famous. I run my dogs cause this sport has burred into my soul like a carpenter bee into a tree. Like Randy said it's my crack. If someone is doing something to keep coondogs out there then we need to stand with them not against them.
