bobcat hunting Brainerd MN area.

Myself and a couple guys are gonna try cat hunting this weekend in the Brainerd area. My cousin is a local and going to guide us but he is not a cat hunter.
He has some buddies that are but I'm not sure if they have any dogs currently.
What are the chances we'll get in on some races if we just pack a couple of idiot coondogs that have never run cats?
We're going no matter what. I'd just like to believe we'll have some remote chance at success. Probably wishful thinking.
Anyone in that area Saturday where we could possibly tag along for awhile to at least get in on some action?

Thanks for the offer Chris. How far are you from the Motely / Staples area? If you could, please PM me a phone number that I could reach you on. I should know more about our game plan later this week. My cousin is still talking to his buddies trying to get us set up.

Thanks Chris. I put your number in my phone. Mine is 507-421-2563.
My cousin is still working some of his local connections. We'll see what we can line up.
We're pretty stoked about this trip!

Yea hunting cats can be a blast lots of walking involved but right now you guys have more snow then us so walking here will be easy going as far as the snow goes.

Our only reservation is that we find tracks but don't have the dog power to do anything with them.
We don't expect to kill cats, we're just hoping to get some good races and hopefully see a cat and just maybe have an opportunity to take one.

Well weather your dogs have the nose power or not to start a cat from the road can always just jump the cat by walking the track out and cut your dog on the jumped track and go from there but who knows maybe they can take one from the road.

Between us we have 2 females I'm sure could work a track from the road. But they're both in heat. So we're gonna be stuck with the young knuckleheads.

I'm just south of Wadena in Bertha. I have a dog who has tracked everything we've ever put him on, and I bet he'd track a cat if we put him on the trail.

I'm off work Saturday and would be happy to go along if you want to try my pup out. If you're interested drop me an email at
ekfla@aol.com

If not, good luck and let us know how you make out.

Haven't yet, but I'm expecting a call from one of my neighbors now that muzzleloading is done with. They run a pack of dogs around our area and said that I could take my dog out with them to see how he does.

Just finally got settled back home from cat hunting. Thanks to Chris Dailey and the other locals that offered input and advice.

It was sure nice to get out of the house and try something new and get the hounds some exercise.

We got up there Friday evening just before dark and my cousin showed us some public and private ground.

We got up Saturday and started driving looking for tracks. Saw lots of tracks but snow conditions weren't real good combined with inexperienced hunters we didn't find but a few real promising tracks.

We made a half hearted attempt to walk out a few tracks but ended up going into an area where we had multiple sets of somewhat recent tracks and appeared to be populated by a few cats. We decided to just free cast and hope for the best. We were fortunate to get some excited and dogs got a track going real good and got treed out in a frozen swamp in a lonely evergreen. Tree was empty but appeared to have signs that something had climbed and busted limbs up high made us believe whatever it was bailed. Dogs retreed again and as we closed it, they went back on the run and quit and came in. We believe that they obviously had run something but after it had bailed a couple times, they began to question whether they should be running it. After all, each of the young dogs has been molded and shaped to never run anything but coon they're entire lives.

At the end of the day, they had a few chases in and a lot of treeing leaving. Not 100% sure what they were always doing but it was fun anyway.

It was definitely exciting!

This morning snow conditions were much better with an inch or so of fresh powder but no good tracks were found.
We free cast them in the same area as yesterday but nothing real exciting. We called it quits about noon so we could pack up and head for home.

It sure was a fun experience and we've talked about possibly trying again next year with more time. I don't think I can justify feeding a "cat dog" with such a short season on them and no local established population but I sure wouldn't mind putting some more effort into preparing them for such a trip in another year.

Suprisingly, even after talking to some experienced locals, we never ran into another cat hunter the whole weekend.

I did see my first porcupine (2 of them) in the wild, and first wolf (2 of them also) in the wild. With that and good buddies made the whole trip worth it.
