I need some advise on some elevated kennels. I rent the place I live curently and have no intention on pouring crete there for my kennels. I'm tired of scraping dirt and and having to move the kennels to fresh grass all the time. I'm building some platforms that are just the size of the kennels. They will be 2X6 framed and will have plywood decks. It will not be treated but painted, I'm not intrested in spending a bunch of money on the treated lumber. I have all the 2X6's here already so I just have to get the OSB decking. I thought about the coating I'm going to paint on them. I may just use standard barn paint paint but thought about that black asphalt fence paint. It is supposed to be very durable and penetrates real good. Just worried about the dogs being on a hot black surface all summer. They will have shade but just want some opinions on this. Or should I use the barn paint and just repaint them every couple years? I f so what color would you use, white,red or brown?

Well I don't really think that build elevated kennels are the best Idea but do what you too, but if your gonna use paint use white because its reflects heat. Black absorbs sunlight therefor the surface will be a lot hoter. If I was gonna do it I would use treated lumber also because it would last a lot longer than untreated. But yea use white paint, it will get dirty faster but it would be easier on the dogs.

Again I'm not tryin to talk ya out of this because it may be the best thing for ya, but why don't you just get another kennel and just rotate them? it would be hard to build a durable, light wieght kennel. A good stong one would take atleast two guys to move around, I would think.

Just buy treated lumber, by the time you figure in the cost of a decent paint you could have spent the money on treated lumber that doesn't need painted. I have a three run kennel that didn't cost that much. I can put pics up tomorrow if you would like to see it. I think I have around $200 in it, I'm not exactly sure, but it definitely wasn't any more than that.

If your going to stay in this rental for a couple years pour concrete. Three 6' x 12' kennels would take 3 yards of concrete, about $300.00. Your platform material isn't free either.
