I'll probably make someone mad,
but I would think that it is much easier to make a Nt.Ch. or Gr.Nt.Ch. the last 5-10 years than it was 20-40 years ago.
First, I'll answer the question that was asked. I have finished 9 dogs to Nt.Ch. over the years, & 4 to Gr.Nt.Ch. After they made Nt.Ch. I would try to put the wins toward Gr.Nt.Ch. on them at larger Hunts. Once they made Nt.Ch. that dog would never be for sale.
IMO, if a dog can't make Nt.Ch. or Gr.Nt.Ch. in todays Hunts, as small as the entry's are, there is something wrong with that dog. There's a BIG difference in winning a Hunt where there are just 1-3 casts of dogs entered compared to a Hunt where there are 15-20 casts of dogs entered.

I think John hits it pretty much right on the head with his statement.
To answer the post. 40+ Nite Champions and right at 20 Grand Nites, but now I have been around for some time now, in fact I may be called an old timer. Alan Kalal
