Just a few Questions? for you pro cat hunters??
I,m new to cat hunting but Im likeing it!!!
I know day hunts are better but i work=(, so what would be better to jump a cat at night and, wate till morning to cut the hounds or, cut the hounds at nite and run till morning?

Will bobcats cross water(biger then they can jump)?
or dont they mind geting wet?

Would a dog coming into a tree late(a few min.) make the cat jump? Also baying in some rocks??

Went on my first cat hunt friday nite jumped a cat at midnight, treed twice and bayed up once then that cat went on a run, and the doges ended up 30 min behind, dident help being 10 degrees or less and snowing!!

Derek, you live south of Erie, PA right ? I'm in Titusville and like you I just started running cats last year. I treed the odd cat off and on while coon hunting at night, they just jump,run, tree,jump, run for hours. Last winter daytime the closest dad and I got was baying one in a hollow log.It did run a spring run and crossed thru a sluice pipe under a road, but it ran along the creek and did not cross it. If you're gonna hunt them at night, kill your light going into the tree, be real quiet and keep the wind in your favor, or else you'll have a whole lot of walking ! Good luck and if you're ever down this way on a Sat. morning, maybe we'll try to tree a cat. Hope this helps, Bill Gray

Bill, Thats where i have been hunting, may be going over to Gods country (Potter county) next weekend, the terraine over there looks like it could be part of the Rockys or something. Didn't make it out cat hunting last night not much snow to track. Have you ever checked out Oilcreek?? I almost went there last night. I ended up treeing three coon and put two in holes last night. Put a pair of cats in a cave saterday morning after spending 15 hours in the mountains, it was -8 with the wind and got well over a foot of snow. ever one thought i was nuts but i knew when i found a track it would be hot!! may be next weekend i'll get one down to the dog.

but heres what I can tell you.
Yes cats will swim and often will cross water when being run, it can be hard for the dogs to smell where the cat came out of the water for a few minutes.
They move at different times of the night and day but are most active early morning and evening in general, if the barn cats are out prowling you can usually bet the bobcats are too.
It seems like the jumping and baying thing seems to be an eastern thing. I hunt cats out west in the snow and on bare ground. I have only seen a cat bail out (well, without any 'help') once, usually around here they stay treed.
I have caught a handful of cats on the ground over the years, usually this ends pretty badly for the cat but I have been to one bay up where the dogs did not have the cat partly consumed yet and he was able to jump into a tree while the dogs were distracted by me.
I just finished watching a video called 'The catmen' its all east coast hunts and at least half the cats were bay ups. I'm not sure why they tree here and bay up so often there. (other than my potlickers like to eat them and I usually have more than two dogs out most times) The country here is not much different from what I saw on the video well other than its flat back there and brushier in some places here, so I'm not sure what makes the difference but I am very curious as to why there is one.

Oh, if you do tree one your dogs may not be 100% accurate on the tree, if you get there and its slick take a few minutes to check the surrounding trees, cats take a big jump into a tree. They do not climb like a coon, therefore the dogs are usually locating/treeing on body scent and depending on the breeze and how far they were behind the cat when he climbed they might be off by a tree. They can also hide right in front of your eyes, I have seen someone have to climb the tree to find the cat.
