ticked walkers

Ok, I'm not a walker man, been out of the shows and hunt for years. Went to my first UKC event in 15 years the other night. There were some folks showing some walkers that were VERY heavily ticked (to the point I thought they were english dogs when I first saw them). They were good looking hounds, but, what I am wondering...How does this reflect on them in a show? I didn't see anything about it in the breed standards. And so you know, I'm not just hating on them cuz they beat me. I won Best of Show with my black male against two of these dogs. I'm just curious. One of the littermates to these dogs is a CH. Personally, I'm just wondering how.

Congratulations on your win!!!! Ticks don't hurt a thing, but most judges don't seem to care for them.

I have a 15 month old male Walker that I made a CH before he was a year old. This pup is off a son of Bad Habit and a daughter of Fred...open spotted and VERY ticked up. He went BMOS for all but one of his wins to make CH. To date his ONLY losses have been against Walkers that were more "traditional" colors. That's the only reason I haven't shown him at "bigger" events. This is what the breed standard says as far as color goes for the Walkers. I don't personally see any mention of ticking, but I could be wrong...

"Tri-colored (white-black-tan) is preferred. White may be the predominant color, with black spots and tan trim; or black may be the predominant color with white markings and tan trim, such as saddle back, or blanket back. White with tan spots, or white with black spots is acceptable.

Any other color combination is to be penalized in the show ring."

I personally think my pup is a nice looking dog, even though he does have a substancial amount of ticking. His conformation is certainly comparable to that of my "real" show dogs! I know many folks frown upon dogs of his color though, so that's why I've kept him local. In my experience it's just been a matter of preference. I don't mind the open spotted, ticked Walkers myself...

very nice looking hound, and true, he does have a few ticks, but, you really don't understand what these dogs looked like.... they were EXTREMELY heavily ticked, and the ticks were very dark and predominant. I truly thought they were saddle backed english dogs. too bad I didn't get a picture of them. I knew that I couldn't find any place in writing that mentioned it, but, I also know it doesn't match up to conventional coloring. I was just wondering how much difference it makes in a show. This was my young black and tan's first event, and to be honest, I was wondering if their appearance might have had anything to do with his win. Don't get me wrong, he's probably the finest looking hound I have ever owned, but, he handled horribly on the bench that night and I didn't think we stood a chance.

Thanks for the compliments on Waylon guys. Honestly I wouldn't worry that your dog only won because of the other dogs' coloring. I could be wrong, but I believe that the color would really only come into play if the judge believed your dog and the other were extremely close in quality...a tiebreaker of sorts if you will. Like I said, I could be wrong (especially given how English-y you guys say these dogs looked) but I wouldn't let it get you concerned about the quality of your own dog. Congrats on your win, and good luck....
