lot of dens?

Went out last night for 2 hours and ended up treeing 6 dens and had 2 slicks. I didnt know if anyone else was having that luck or if it was cause there is a storm system coming in late tonight (Friday night). I am hunting a buddies dog that hasnt been out since may so i'm not expecting a lot out of him but he isnt doing too bad for being fatter than a hog haha!

several factors here

Dog is out of shape / stale... could be lack of track speed... All the dumb coon are dead by now so the smart ones head straight for home as soon as a dog opens. Hopefully not this one, dog is backtracking.....

I would like to know how many of you people actually look in a den tree this time of year when your dog trees one. I have a female here that is as good as anything i have hunted against. I also thought she was back tracking. Last time out cold & windy 6 trees 2 coon outside 4 dens was able to get up 2 of them both had a coon inside 1 the coon peeked out the 4th was'nt able to get up and check.

Fred. I do that all the tim. Mainly with a youngdog. But trust me a lot of the time the dog isn't trailing, they are just jamming stinky den trees and sure, they are going to get lucky with some coon occasionally

She trailed to all these trees. When we get snow up here in Minnesota & 10-15 degrees them coon don't wonder to far from their dens. The 2 on the outside were big boars wish I had the camera the one was over 30 lbs. The bad thing is probably the last hunt of the year. Winter storm warning here & cold.

Treed two dens right away.....6 coon afterwards. 16-18 degrees here last night. One track she carried about 150 yards to the tree, the other she jammed up on it. Sent her back down the creek and she made two singles before we went to a different spot. Hit a double layed up and followed with two singles again. As cold as it was, I figured we were looking at a night of den trees. I'll take 6 anytime the nights are like that.

We've been making some dens this week now that the colder weather moved in.

It is funny reading some of the replies. Up here this time of year, after walking to several den trees I seldom consider back tracking. Does it happen? Sure it does. But this time of year in this area it has more to do with coon movement or lack there of, more so than back tracking.

I worry more about backtracking in ideal conditions when other dogs are treeing coon and I'm pulling mine of more than it's share of den trees.

About one in four of ours have been den trees since it turned cold. We have treed two on the outside that ran into den holes after I missed them. The problem we are having more than any is getting them to look.

I am also having are hard time getting them to look. Last couple mine treed I had everyone turn the lights out so I could look for lumps in the tree.

I made 4 dumps last night and saw 4 coons. The funny thing was 3 of them were dens. I was able to see the coon inside 2 of them and the coon was laying outside on another one.

If I had just treed 3 dens out of 4 trees, I'd be wondering, too....

I have learned a valuable lesson this year. If you have a good dog never doubt it until you know it's wrong.

I always make more den trees this time of year than any other. Like others have said a lot of the time if you can look inside the tree there will be a coon in it, if you have a dog that is not backtracking or slicking.

I hardly ever make a den from may through the end of November but starting with the first cool spell in December until the little ones hit the ground in late spring I always make quite a few dens.

Marc, I think you are right on it..............I agree.

I think some just want to jump to conclusions too fast. You have to know your dog also, you should be able to tell what it is doing if you have done your homework................From what is said in the original post, I would say legit tracks TO the tree, not backtracking........................Tim

i see all your guys points but during spring and summer this dog almost always has a coon...very reliable dog normally. But im hunting him again tonight so i will see what he does. Its a little warmer today. Plus the places i hunt are pretty over hunted.

Sunday night a week ago was full moon. The dogs ran a good hot track about 1/4 mile past the county dirt road. They normally get one treed before they get to the county road. That tree was not hollow but an even bigger tree leaned over to the top of that one, which I found out later was hollow. But I can find them by moonlight as good as anybody so I started looking and right in the center of the thickest part where I really wanted to look a big tree got in the way. In that same branch we made four more sure enough hollows. I got to looking around and found about every fourth tree was hollow. Moved to a different spot and got one on the outside and he would not look, I found him in the moon with his head pointed staight at the moon.
Lesson one , I am goint to try to stay away from that branch with all the hollows
Lesson two, I'm wondering if I like moonlight nights as much as I think I do. When I think about hunting while I not hunting I think about those long hot best races of the year in moonlight. But when I'm out hunting in it I don't care that much for it. Something just doesn't seem right. You know what I mean?
