I have bench tested two different VR500 for the specific purpose you are wanting to use it for and here are my non technical results. Both units tested out virtually the same.
Very compact and easy to carry.
They will recognize the beat tone as good as anything else on the market.
Receiver sensitivity is good enough for tracking dogs but not hardly as good as my wildlife trx10 which was expected.
The biggest issue I found was the digital signal meter was not as responsive as it could be and that was expected as well because these units were not particularly designed for weak signal detection which is what we are doing.
Unless you are getting one rediculously cheap, I would go with the Icom as well, but be prepared to buy many AA batteries and/or charge the Icom often!
The VR500 was on closeout a couple of months ago for $200 new. I would not pay over $100 for one of these units used. You may still find a dealer or two who may have one left!
If you are just wanting to track dogs and nothing else, I would find a reputable seller if possible, and buy one of these trx3 with collars for around 250-300 dollars. If you need to track many collars or more flexibility, that will be another matter and the trx3 may not suit you.
