How would you call your dog?

Ok, your hunting in a normal UKC hunt, there is 1 minute left, you have 425+ the dog behind you has 350+, your dog has been hammering a tree for about thirty seconds. There are no leaves on. The other dogs are not barking and no where to be found. Do you tree your dog and try to get more points? Or do you not tree and take the cast win? I was just curious to see how thisnwould be handled.

it depends on how accurate your dog is... if you believe that your dog is very accurate then jump on it, if your not to sure then you dont have to tree your dog. the 5 minute stationary rule cant get you ... your call

I need to know more!
Is this a one cast hunt or do I gotta beat another cast? Are we hunting out of Marcellus Michigan where 425 might be good enough for 4th or are we hunting out of Rogersville Tenn where 425 is a winning score?
I have lost more casts by not keeping my mouth shut.

Call the dog

If the dog is treed- tree it! I call my dog as it goes - if he's treed I will call it. Love those hunts with no leaves!

your dog is "struck" for those points, so your already "holding" those is another dog barks or covers. i hold on treeing it unless the second dog gets struck AND treed.

I would tree my dog NO MATTER what!!!! I mean that's why youre out there aint it?! The only way I wouldn't tree my dog is if there was one cast. I go to a nite hunt to see how many coon my dog can tree against competition so if one of my dogs locate and sit down it's my job to tree them. If there slick or whatever then that's their fault not mine but they are getting treed.

I hope I draw you guys that tree there dog no matter what.
If the dog is accurate and can hold pressure than tree him, if there's a chance he don't allways hold then be a smart handler and win your cast. Dont open your mouth so you can insert foot.

Todd, if my dog is obviously treed then there gettting treed leaves or no leaves, 5 degrees or 50 degrees. That's why I put all the time into them throught the week. If they pull of their tree because dogs are running around them then you better BET I wouldn't have had it there to begin with. Every dog makes mistakes no matter how good just the same as good handlers but leaving a tree is something I will not tollerate. The first dog I ever hunted in a nite hunt was a decent dog by himself but had what I call "big ears" when cut in a cast. he didn't last long. It all goes back to if you want to be a consistent cast winner put the time into the dogs throughout the week. Many forget that part

call him

personally i call it how it is. if your dogs doin it fess up if he aint fess up. if you've got to be a "smart handler" to compensate for your dog, well that explains a lot to me.

I think as everyone said it would depend a lot if it's an open cast and you needed the first place or a nite ch cast and there was the possibility of being beat by the other cast, etc. Lots of variables.

If it were an open cast and I needed a first and was sure of my dog staying hooked and having the meat, tree him. If I just need a cast win I'd let him tree the 30 seconds and take the win.

If it were a nt ch cast an there was more than one nt ch cast I'd tree him, again presuming I knew he'd stay and have the goods. If we're the only nt ch's in the hunt, I'd just take the win and not tree.

BUT-- in either scenario if that dog that's in second place is struck in and even makes a half way locate attempt with my dog I'll throw him on the paper. It also depends if my dog has first strike, the 2nd dog has second strike, if he gets first tree and I take second I still win.

I don't know, the more I think about it. There are too many variables in each hunt. I could say all this then do the total opposite when it comes down to it depending on what type of event and such. This is just my opinion and it's probably not even worth 1/2 a cent.

Loose lips sink ships.

In a hunt a dog and a handler are a team the dog has 450+ and is leading why would you jepordize his previous work?? Down here thats good to go most night. If its a 1 cast hunt and you do this your not carrying your part of the load for the team. I have hurt my old dog more trying to help her than she has ever hurt herself.

These are the responses I figured I would get. Say it is around your home club, do need a first, and say there are 2 other casts out.

To me it all depends on the dog. I wouldn't tree my dog until another dog comes in and trees first on that tree. See the coon I still win, say I get minused somehow and the other dog is circled we tie. I have actually lost a cast by not treeing and also won a few. I would personally just play to win my cast and see how it holds at the club. You can't win that first place with out winning your cast first.

I was just curious to see the handling strategies here.

Depends on the dog but if the dog needs a 1st, there are other casts and its my home club, then I probably tree it.

I can't stand the thought of the dog having a coon and ME costing it a 1st place win. I'd rather lose because the dog messed up.

depends on the other factors that have been stated.... but i have found i do lot better in the hunts when i worry about winning my cast and forget about winning the whole hunt. beat the dogs you draw out with and then hope for the best. i have won a first place ntch with 125+ and lost first place with a 725+ cast win. you never know till deadline.
