coon training question

Hi, I just aquired a couple of walker pups which parents are good bear dogs. My question for you folks is how old should these pups average around to start being interested in coon? Let me say these guy's are young only around eleven or twelve weeks old now. But I used to have patterdale terriers and they would be killing rats by now!At what age do I start serious coon training with these guys they are walkers if that helps any. I have bought this ricards coon training kit and they get happy around the smell when I open the bottle specially the female she will chase the drag and try to grab it. My male will just run off and do puppy things and doesn't care about the drag the smell nothing when he is out of the kennel. Are there any signs I should be doing at this point or am I just being to early in hoping for any signs with hounds. thanks for looking. I am going to hopefully start them on coon and ween them over to bear around a year or so..

As with most coon hounds you will find that they naturally pick up on wanting to hunt. At 12 weeks of age you should really be focusing on teaching them to walk on the lead, loading up in the box, letting them explore the woods, water, etc. The more situations you can make positive for the pups now will pay off when they are hunting in the woods a year from now.

As for "Serious" coon training, I never have pushed a dog until he was mature enough to handle it. What I mean by that is, some dogs are more mature than others. You may have one hound that is nothing but business at 5 months old, and another hound may wait until he/she is 12 months old. When they make the switch you will know it as soon as you cut them off the lead!

Start with the fundamentals, make the training sessions fun and SHORT! Always end on a positive note, leaving your pup wanting more.

pup training

I agre with nc country boy. I have two 16 wk old pups that im starting buy just loading in the box and taking short trips stopping at the woods and going for 30 to 40 min. letting them run and play. Load up and maybe makeing another short drive getting out and another short walk on the leads. Drags are good also but letting them get use the smells in the woods and a lot of socializing with them will payoff big time. jmo
