TELL YOUR FRIEND TO LOOK INTO THE NEW TRACKER MAXIMA, I HAD A OLDER MODEL AND LOVED IT. THE COLLARS I USE ARE THE 4 OZ RATS 3000 HR COLLAR. I TRADED THE TRACKER FOR A QUICK TRACK (MISTAKE). TRACKER DONT HAVE THE RANGE THAT THE QUICK TRACK DOES BUT ITS SO SMALL YOU JUST PUT IT IN YOUR POCKET AND GO HUNT. I WILL OWN ANOTHER TRACKER VERY SOON.

Barry,
Why the choice of a radio collar over a GPS collar. Just wondering. I had a Quick Track. I gave it to my father in law and bought a Garmin Astro. The Garmin is so much nicer. You can "see" your dogs, know EXACTLY how far away they are, can tell instantly if they're coming when you call, know which direction they're circling when running a bunny, can effortlessly track 10 dogs, etc, etc, etc.

The range is a little less than the radio units but to this day I have not had a coon hound or a beagle go out of range. If they do, the unit still shows the last place they were at. You just go in that direction and pick them back up, although they sure would have to be gettin' it to get that far away!

Just interested in your thought process.

Thanks.

how long does the battery last on the garmin collars, i heard 15 to 20 hours. i have lost dogs for days in areas where you have to wait on them to come out on there own,and if the battery dies i might not get my dog back.i have not lost any rabbit dogs yet ,but its almost mandatory to loose at least one fox or deer dog a couple times a month.i only want one tracking system. is it true about the battery life? if the battery last like a regular tracking collar i may buy a garmin instead of a tracker maxima.

I would advise to use a Wildlife receiver and Johnson collars.

James,
The Garmins use rechargeable collars, just like shocking units.

If you have it set to transmit the dogs position every 5 seconds (the default setting) the battery charge lasts 17 hours. If you change the setting to transmit the dogs position every 30 seconds, then you'll get 36 hours out of one charge.
