Doggie Jail (A.k.a. Dog pound) Ohio

Alrite just recently moved to tuscarawas county the dogs are on a licking county kennel license were they are located....I have a dog sitting in the Tusc county dog pound right now even though my phone number is on BOTH collars around her neck..I went running with a guy in this area today and the dogs took off on a rabbit that we SAW and she was the only dog that never came back it was a swampy area and the rabbit swam the swamp and she must have gotten seperated on the way back anyhow to the point my dog got taken the dog pound by the urichsville police instead of just calling me the pound called me and told me i cant pick her up till monday morning and they will be charging me for 2 days at the pound and i would have to buy a tusc county dog license for her ????? anybody know if thats correct since i already have a licking county kennel license in my name. the dog warden told me it did'nt matter since it was picked up in tusc county ??? anybody know where i can get a good reference and find the written laws on this ? I'd rather avoid this little 50.00 fee to pick my dog up that is already licensed in another county??????Money is tight these days and thats a tank of gas!

skc how much did he have to pay to get his dog out and did they make him register the dog in that county ? countrygirl thats basicaly how it went down ? i had a shock collar and my regular collar both with the phone number on them and i did'nt get a call till she was at the pound...someone took her to the police station and they took her to the pound so she changed hands 3 times in this process...this is a first one ever ended up at the pound...

It's frustrating when they take dogs that have I.D. collars to the pound instead of atleast trying to contact the owner's first. Then my dogs run a high chance of catching something and bringing it back & infecting my entire kennel. Not including vet treatment/cost of getting the dog out. To get mine out I had to go to the courthouse and buy a dog tax tag for that county before I could get them out...

Attorney

Sounds like you all need to get a good attorney. Do the laws in WV state that in order to hunt in a county you must have the dog licensed in that county? Sounds like your Sheriff and his boys either control or have strings attached to animal control. This is a big racket that used to go on in days gone by in many areas, but have gotten straighted out. I would be at the Sheriff's Office right now demanding to have my dog returned that was STOLEN by the deputy that picked it up. I am telling you, these boys will run once they see your serious. It may take the attorney to show up with you, but I would not pay one red cent. Make sure you go to the local court while you fight these boys (if they don't give your dog back) and get an order to ensure they don't put the dog down. Again, when they see you are not playing (or paying) they should stop this BS. Also, you may want to get a local news report involved to show this corruption.

i got her back after a 46.00 dollar charge. 18.00 dollars bc the warden had to pick her up at the police dept. keep in my mind this whole time she had two collars with my phone number on them both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and they charged for two days at the pound. keep in mind again they called me saturday after she was at the pound and told me i COULDNT GET HER TILL MONDAY. so they made me pay for two days that they made her stay there even though i told them i wanted to come pick her up saturday!!!!!! i called the licking county dog warden and had them give the license number to tusc so that was taken care even though they threw it in my face that i wasnt in tusc county but licking is where the dogs reside so they had to get over it. then after expressing my displeasure to him about the situation of not being called before they took her to the pound he said this "well look buddy it could have been alot worse we could have gotten you for dog at large" and that is when i slapped the ordiance i was referred to in this post on his desk, and told him he couldnt and this is why. after that i got my dog and left basicaly. Whatever they can do to dig into youre pocket is what they are going to do i guess. I asked them what they do if a dog comes in from a field trial and he said well thats different, and we got into a heated discussion on what exactly defines a dog at large. he said if it ends up property other than were you are hunting its a dog at large. i looked into that and there is nothing to define what a dog at large is anyhwere that i could read....so does anyone know where it defines the term "DOG AT LARGE" in the state of ohio ????

I have looked at the ORC 955 which gives all the laws on dogs, kennel tags and etc. Couldn't find anything on "dogs at large". The dog warden I talked to yesterday that gave me the ORC number John Hembree gave you said there shouldn't be a problem. Sounds like they are trying to make up laws as they go and take all hunters and get their money one way or the other. I will keep researching this.

Keep us informed if you have any more problems. That is what the state association in Ohio is for, to try and help when or where we can.

ohlinger, that sounds like some real made up bs. Glad you got your dog back. I always wondered what would happen if you lose your dog in a different county. I often hunt in many different counties. I would keep looking into this. good luck

I guess the bottomline is im glad i got her back too, but it shouldnt be such a hassel to get a dog back, i feel like they sucked more money out of me than they should have by not letting get my dog until today. I obey the laws and pay my dues to own my dogs, and take the appropriate measures to avoid those situations, and i'd say they take advantage of you when they do get there hands on your dog. As far as what you think is B.S i think your screen name and posts under it pretty well cover what youre trying accomplish on this board just to let you know your not hiding u.k.c can check youre computer I.P address and ban you completely if you keep it up you wont be able to view this board from youre computer not just youre screen name.

Shawn call the Times Reporter in New Philly. They love to print stuff like this. If nothing else send a letter to the editor. Believe me I know, this is the best way to get it out to the public and it will get addressed with the County Commissioners. May even want to send the Commissioners or even the Sheriff a letter. Glad you got her back.
