if you don't have patience,it not gonna be easy, but if you have show dogs your working with it helps.I have found that a 4 month old is the best age to start, putting him up and getting him used to the bench, brushing him and gently stroking him, after a while pushing him forward, backwards, pulling on him from side to side. When he gets around people,I watch him and encourage people to talk and handle him.I put him up on the bench when others are around. At seven months I start being a little more demanding of him, stacking him the way I want him,and some but not all at this time are used to standing still, and already no about holding there head some what still,I constantly stroke the tail downwardly to make it stand up.If they do not naturally get up on their feet in the front I'll make something to put under the pad at the back of the front paws to help hold the back of the foot up,checking to make sure the legs are straight, evenly placed and back legs are in line with front with the hock straight up and down.Sometimes you can put something under the back pad of the paws to help them to stand up also.Pushing backwards will cause the dog to push against the hand of the handler.A little pinching pull will cause the dog to pull away from the handler.Grabbing the dog while standing on the side of him under the chest and apply pressure will help him up on his feet.I use a wire brush to put under his mouth or under his neck to help him hold his head up where I want it.Grabbing, pushing and pulling gently and it takes more sternness with some than others.A hound should look balanced and proportion right , and equal on the bench while motionless like a statue. It takes practice constantly, I put them up every day,for as much as I can stand. Also work on their gate, make them pay attention to you while doing this so they see your steps, making them stay beside you and allow them about a step ahead of you.By now there 9 months old and ready to take to a show,if you think so,listen to the judge that day on his comments to help what he thinks what you need to work on with your hound.Always be a good loser, and a humble winner. Shake your competitions hand if they win or if you win.Show respect always to your hound, comp, and judge in the ring.It helps to bathe your hound before you go.In time work with your hound and showing you will learn what it takes to get your hound to work with ya,and showing at shows what each judge you have showed under before is looking for in the hounds.Ihavent hit every thing for ya but it s a start, maybe be some help to you good luck and see ya in the ring.
