Need Help With Bench Showing

I have been around showing all my life when it comes to horses, but now i am trying to bench show. i have been watching and tryin to learn for about 5 years now. I really dont have anyone to help me with it(or know anyone rather). i have the basics down but I know there is some fine tuning that you need to know that just watching wont get you. Can anyone help? Any advise would be great! should I start with a new puppy bred for it or try to make it with what I have? I have one walker female who is pretty and looks the part but has front legs that are not straight. and I cant get her to look forward and hold her tail. and everything else we have is built to hunt so to speak. not exactly show material : / any advise??

post pics if you can so we can see what you're working with.

talk to the people at the shows and ask if they would mind looking at your dog and give you some pointers. just be prepared if they tell you that becuase of xyz your dog wont make it far. take it as constructive criticism and move on.

most people dont mind helping but some will not becuase you may come back and beat them...with their advice.

good luck.

First

if you don't have patience,it not gonna be easy, but if you have show dogs your working with it helps.I have found that a 4 month old is the best age to start, putting him up and getting him used to the bench, brushing him and gently stroking him, after a while pushing him forward, backwards, pulling on him from side to side. When he gets around people,I watch him and encourage people to talk and handle him.I put him up on the bench when others are around. At seven months I start being a little more demanding of him, stacking him the way I want him,and some but not all at this time are used to standing still, and already no about holding there head some what still,I constantly stroke the tail downwardly to make it stand up.If they do not naturally get up on their feet in the front I'll make something to put under the pad at the back of the front paws to help hold the back of the foot up,checking to make sure the legs are straight, evenly placed and back legs are in line with front with the hock straight up and down.Sometimes you can put something under the back pad of the paws to help them to stand up also.Pushing backwards will cause the dog to push against the hand of the handler.A little pinching pull will cause the dog to pull away from the handler.Grabbing the dog while standing on the side of him under the chest and apply pressure will help him up on his feet.I use a wire brush to put under his mouth or under his neck to help him hold his head up where I want it.Grabbing, pushing and pulling gently and it takes more sternness with some than others.A hound should look balanced and proportion right , and equal on the bench while motionless like a statue. It takes practice constantly, I put them up every day,for as much as I can stand. Also work on their gate, make them pay attention to you while doing this so they see your steps, making them stay beside you and allow them about a step ahead of you.By now there 9 months old and ready to take to a show,if you think so,listen to the judge that day on his comments to help what he thinks what you need to work on with your hound.Always be a good loser, and a humble winner. Shake your competitions hand if they win or if you win.Show respect always to your hound, comp, and judge in the ring.It helps to bathe your hound before you go.In time work with your hound and showing you will learn what it takes to get your hound to work with ya,and showing at shows what each judge you have showed under before is looking for in the hounds.Ihavent hit every thing for ya but it s a start, maybe be some help to you good luck and see ya in the ring.

All I have to say is maybe all of the coonhound breeds would get better if more people bred for dogs that were built to hunt instead of stand there and look pretty.

I will post pics soon..thanks! and coon's age, thank you that was helpful it kinda gave me an idea! and by built to hunt and not to show i mean: you cant tell me that every GRNTCH or good hunting hound out there will pass on the table at a bench show. Because a crooked foot or certain color can be a flaw on a show bench that makes them lose, it makes no difference to a hunter when there is meat in the tree. Not saying they are built to hunt because they have flaws....just saying they were not all bred on looks, mainly on their hunting ability. I know it would be ideal to have the text book model dog that preformed in the woods as perfectly as they do on a bench but its just not something I have(i wish i did) thats all : ) Thanks again!

I wish I'd known you wanted some help when you guys were in Spartanburg. I'd have been more than happy to give you a few pointers. I'm no pro myself yet, but I can get the job done...and I don't mind helping out those that want to learn. Holler at me next time y'all are up this way!

this is the walker that has her front toes turned out and i hope to maybe show??

I was told she is too "big boned" to compete against the daintier redbone females??i know she isnt set up in the pic..but she does have an issue with not being very tight bodied..if that makes sense?

this is a young plott who is lanky but looking better with age..she was about 7 months in this pic and wasnt very agreeable either, but she's young too. what do you think? I tried to get pictures that were remotly helpful but they may not be...

Welcome Banjo,

just remember that we are supposed to be showing coon hounds, not big time westminster show dogs that have been bred for their show genetics. But its fun to think so.

Yep, I'll be there. If fact, I'm probably going to go down pretty early that week and stay at my deer club so if y'all come down early we'll get together. I'm going to have my hands full Saturday showing probably 5-6 dogs, and hunting my NTCH female that night but we'll get together for sure.

How old is the Walker female? The toed out issue will sometimes correct itself if she's still growing. I've had 2 Walkers that did the same pretty badly when they were young, but they straightened up a good bit. I gave mine (well, still do) a 500mg Vitamin C tablet every day and I think it really helped with their feet and legs. Hard to explain how to do it here, but I can show you a way to set her up on the bench that camoflauges that flaw a bit...of course it will still show up in her gait, but it CAN be made less obvious on the bench.

i hunt my show dogs and show my hunting dogs. any good hunting dog should have good conformation. but show what you have and have a good time. that is the whole point. the best way to learn is to just go out and do it.
i started showing horses and moved on to competitive trail. it was a lot more fun. when we got into coonhounds we watched a few shows then jumped in. we found a lot of people willing to help and give us pointers. but when i go to a bench show i just dust off my ole hunter and we go. win or lose we have fun.

Re: Welcome Banjo,

: ) I know there are two sides, two opinions, two faces to every argument and I bet this one will be just as hard to find a happy medium in! I think thats where some of my hesitations in showing are, part of me wants to stay true to what a "real" coonhound is and should be, but at the same time it is unrealistic to cull a good hunting dog for the sake of the bench. To create a "perfect dual purpose hound. And if showing these hounds is anything like showing other breeds and even in horses, then things that by a rulebook"dont matter" truly do!(unfortunatley) I have heard a lot of people say that "scars caused by hunting" can cause you the win when the competition gets stiff. If this is the case then I cant blame people for not hunting there show dogs. However those choices do set the bar even trickling down to local club events where that is just not feasible. I think there is a place for everyone who is involved in the coondog world. There has to be a balance of good and bad as well, like any other association or club. I may be completely wrong but its just an observation. : ) Of course I do still have a lot to learn! I do appreciate your advice and opinions though!!

PS

My mind goes faster than i type so if i dont make any sense I apologize!and im not picking on either side im just trying to understand and to kinda ride the fence on this one : /
