I am thinking of going to the night hunt on friday or saturday night this weekend. I have never been in a hunt. I have watched a few casts. my dog has not been in a hunt. Does anyone have any advise so we don't get run all over! We (me and the dog) just want to have fun and try it. Any adivse on what to do the first time?

That area has some of the best guys around to hunt with.

When you get there, look up Larry Robinson. Tell him I said to be good to ya.

Others you might accidently run into could be Ron Thompson or Troy Johnson, these guys will treat you right as well. There are several other, names escape me its late.

I cant think of any better place to go to your first hunt than there.....unless you run into Jay Thomas (jk) if you do tell him I told you to watch him every step of the way. lol.

I honestly cant think of 1 person in the area I ever met and didnt like.

Matt come on up. I grew up at this club and will say 99% of the people will help you along in the hunt. They will explain why their doing something and give you suggestion on what to do in certain situations to help. I have never been on a lets say real bad hunt out of legrand club. Jay got watch him Larry he'll lie to ya. Ron same as the other two. Their english guys get where i'm going with this LOL. Honestly there all good people. Well except the english guys LOL.

Just show up with a good attitude, call your dog for what it does and remember 3 out of every 4 guys are going to lose so don't get to hung up on winning. If your dog is capable you will win your fair share. Learning the rules is the biggest challenge. Don't be afraid to ask questions but try to do it between drops when people aren't listening for dogs. Be polite.... even if you feel you are taken advantage of. Just ask politely why things are being done the way they are. If you start making accusations of hosing you over most people will give you the cold shoulder. If you ask nice hopefully you'll get a reasonable explanation and if your lucky shown were to find the answer on the card. I've noticed usually you get the same treatment you give while on a cast. You want to be a jerk to people...... likely the same demeanor is coming back at you.

The Le Grand club is a very good club and they do have a bunch of good guys along with some real nice hunting.

The other thing I like to do to prepare for a hunt is carry a card with me while pleasure hunting and treat it like a real hunt. Time the trees, score the trees etc. Then if you run into a situation you're not sure about you can look on the back of the card. If you can't find the answer there you post your situation here and see what Jim has to say about it. Or ask some of the guys at the club house before the hunt starts..... Jack Bingham would be a good one to ask as I know he has a real good handle on the rules. But I'm sure there are others who can help with any questions as well.

The most important thing though is to have fun and enjoy watching all the dogs work and the company of others who enjoy the same sport as you. I have made some good friends in this sport and have learned allot from them. Good luck at the hunt.

Thanks guys I know I will be there on firday night and maybe saturday. I have a walker dog lol so sorry english guys!!!! he is 5 and is the nicest dog I have ever owned!!!!!! I do have a few questions.
1) can I run my garmin collar and tracker collar both and leave the garmin 220 in the truck?
2)my dog doesn't like to jump on the tree if other dogs are on it is it ok if he stays back like 5 ft and looks up do they still call that treeded? by himself he will jump on it be he don't like being jumped on so instead of fighting he just stays out of the way? should I just tell the cast about that before we start?
I'm not worried about the dog just me!!!! he lives to hunt!!!! and I just want to try something new!!!
THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE

Kyle has some good advise... look at it as fun and you will be fine call your dog for what you beleave he is doing and if you have a question ask. read the rules a few times. I hunt in Le Grand alot. they are a great club and a good bunch of guys. i am sure i will be there on friday so if you have questions look me up.

as far as your garmin yes you can run it on your dog. if you carry the receaver on you.. you have to leave it turned off during hunt time. you can use it during time outs. if you want to leave it on you can leave it in the truck.

if i was judgeing and your dog was showing treed five feet from the tree he is Fine in fact i like a dog that will stay out of trouble and back up a little if things are getting crazy at the tree.
good luck and hope to see you at LeGrand.

Matt just put your garmin on him mark the truck before you get ready to get your dog out once it's mark shut it off and carry it with you that we don't get lost when you can use it. As long as your dog shows the tree he is treeing its fine as long as he's under the hood. You may want to let your judge know most judges will ask before you cut loose is there anything you want to tell me before we cut loose about your hound. AT that point you can say he may come out to meet me a little or he'll be off the tree with other hounds there. So they'll know before hand. Good luck and see ya there friday.
