If he wants a squirrel dog it sounds like to me she would pick it up in the woods pretty quick, from what you described. I have found out doing this squirrel dog deal that most squirrel hunters think a 2 - 2 1/2 year old dog is still a pup.. LOL I sold a 2 1/2 yr. old Feist squirrel dog too a man, and I called her a broke full blown squirrel dog, cause she would tree squirrels every time I took her out. He said she was not a full blown broke squirrel dog she was to young to be that.... I have trained hounds { coondogs } for years, I would say a 2-year old hound that is not treeing nice at that age would be on the outs for hunting.. JMO But these squirrel dog trainers, from who I've talked to thinks 2-yrs. old is just the right age on getting them started good...

Hope he at leasts tries her this fall and winter in the woods before kicking her to the side, it might be the best squirrel dog in the woods and he would have never known it....

noone thinks a 2 1/2 is still a pup. [one or two might ] but any way it is never too old. i got a 4 year old brood gyp never been hunting till i bought her 3 mo latter she was a broke sq dog..if they have it you can bring it out if they dont they just dont.

truebluefordman, apparently you havent ever been around any die hard walker men, I have heard them call a 4 year old dog a pup.....

Most hounds if not hunted or just not doing anything by two generally never make it, but I have heard of alot of cur and feist dogs that werent hunted until 3,4 or even 5 and made good dogs...

If a dog is tree minded and you say this one is treeing squirrels in the yard I think it would be worth a try. My wife has a 7-yr. old Walker Gyp. We bought her last year. She was a brood gyp and hadn,t been hunted but she was tree minded. We hunted her hard all summer with our other dogs and also had to do some trashbreaking on her. We entered her in her first nite hunt in August. This was the Smokey Mtn. Championship UKC hunt held at the Loudon County Club in East TN. She won her cast with plus points and got third place registered and looked real good. So I think it depends on the dog. I dont think a dog that is not tree minded at two and a half would have as much chance of making it.
