If a female goes over an hour between pups that is too long according to my vet. My female just had six and between the second and third was about two and a half hours. She was pushing and would blow up but no pup. I got her out walked her and it wasn't five minutes she pushed the pup out. If she pushes too long she will go out of labor. And may not start back and then you got a mess and a heck of a vet bill. TRUST ME I have the receipts to prove it. I have never heard of a dog taking three days to have pups but I would have had her to the vet way before that. Walk her around stimulates her labor but if it doesn't take her to the vet. Already lost one good female due to my lack of want to. Won't happen again if I can help it. May cost a little but I don't breed a dog unless she is worth breeding. It is worth the money.

Walk her around. It may help the pup to turn. It worked for me. The vet told me that a while back. Walk her and lightly jog her. Just a little. Put her back in her lot and watch to see if she starts pushing again. My female had her fourth pup before I could get her back to her kennel. She picked it up and carried to the box.

Please Help With A Female Having Pups

I had this same situation on September 5. I have a 4 1/2 year old female that had two previous litters. I came in on Friday night about 11:00 pm and noticed she was in labor. I stayed up with her till about 2:00 am. She had contractions, but no pups. I went to sleep and got up about 5:00 am. She had two pups by 6:00 am. One was in great shape, but the first pup was still born. She too was large as you describe your female. I decided to call my vet at about 7:00. We got her to the clinic about 8:30 that morning with no other pups. He was not especially worried about this- he indicated that some females have longer labor than others. He did an x-ray and found three more puppies. He gave her an injection of potassium and oxytosin to accelerate her labor. It took her the rest of the day Saturday and part of Saturday night to have the other three puppies. The four puppies and my female are doing great. The vet bill was about $80, but well worth the peace of mind and for healthy puppies.

SOME VERY GOOD FRIENDS OF OURS BRED THEIR FEMALE TO SID. LAST WEEK SHE STARTED HAVING HER PUPS. HAD 2 THEN QUIT, RUSHED HER TO VET. 1 WAS STUCK. IT DIED. THEY DID C SECTION. SHE HAD 13 TOTAL. LOST 2 MORE. ANNIE GOT REALLY SICK AND ALMOST DIED. LAST 10 PUPS DIED TODAY.

DONT WAIT. IF YOU R WORRIED ENOUGH TO GET ON HERE AND ASKED U SHOULD TAKE HER BEFORE ITS TO LATE.

Amen Christy. If you like your dog don't wait. The female I lost didn't cost me but $145.00. That included X-rays, oxytocin, putting her down and them spending all day with her. Her uterus ruptured, she got infected, and that caused seven of thirteen pups to die. We took six home without their mother and watched them die as we tried to bottle feed them and care for them. I also waited on another female and had to have a C-section. Lost the pups and barely saved her. That one cost me $685.00. I have found since these two incidents not to wait and see. If I start getting worried it is off to the vet we go. If he tells me no big deal atleast I know I did right by my dog. They do right by me by doing what I ask of them, so I try to do right by them. I even took a female to the vet to get her put on fluids. It was very hot and she was having a little trouble but I still got a little worried because it had been two hours between her last pup and the one she was trying to have. She was on the edge of being dehydrated and that was stopping her labor. They put in an I-V and within ten minutes she was popping out pups. Shot the last three out fast. That was an after hours clinic and cost me $200.00. Simply put the faster you get them help the less it will cost you in the long run.

It has been my experience that if a gyp takes too long between pups, I give her a 1/2 cc of Oxcytocin to stimulate the uterus to contact and produce more productive labor. A whelping should never run more them a day long. You are risking her life and the lives of the pups, both born and unborn. If she has a pup that dies inside her and holds up the rest, that dead pup will set up infection and will turn your gyp septic. Go to a local farmer that milks cows and get you some oxcytocin. I always get 3cc and use it in 1/2cc doses. Give it IM (in the hip) and walk you gyp around on a lead. You should start to see contractions. I give this even after the gyp is done whelping, to help her pass any placentas that may still be inside her and will cause an infection that can kill her. She will get an inner uterine infestion and die very fast. If this is a valuable dog, don't wait, go to the vet and I mean NOW. This is not normal. The best he can say is she is done and send her home, the worst is she will need a c-section and yes, that can run into money, but is losing her and the pups all about money?

GET HER TO THE VET.

IF OXCYTOCIN IS ADMINST AT HOME, AND THE VET STILL HAS TO DO A C-SECTION, YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANCE THE FEMALE WON'T MAKE IT.

As long as she's not trying to have a pup and its not coming out she should be fine. I've had them go an hour or more between pups.

IF she's trying to have it and nothing is coming out then I would say she has one stuck inside her and get her to a vet asap. Other wise I wouldn't be to worried about her.

I have NEVER in all my 22 yrs. of raising dogs had a female die from a shot of oxcytocin. This isn't a wonder drug, but in the right hands and with experience, the drug will work. I get mine from a farmer or from my vet. My vet knows I know what I'm doing with it and that I don't abuse it. I have used oxcytonin on females that were having big litter and ended up needing c-sections and they and the pups survived. These same females went on to whelp pups in later litters and were fine. I never whelp a female without having it on hand...NEVER!
