Well how do you score this one?

Down to a two dog cast with a Non-hunting judge.

Dog A trees and the cast goes in and begins scoring the tree. One man says he finds it and as the other two arrive he decides that it is not a coon rather a squirrel. The Judge looks and says he is certain its not a squirrel but thinks it might be a ground hog. The third member says no it is in fact a coon.

After looking and debating they are all in question on what the critter is. In the end the Judge goes with his first opinion and says he is leaning toward it being a ground hog and Scratches dog A. From my understanding whatever this critter was it was fairly high in the tree, higher then one would imagine a ground hog to climb. Could it have been a odd color coon?

Do you give the dog the benefit of the doubt? Do you scratch him cause you are leaning one way more then the other? It just seems to me that there should be no shaddow of a doubt in anyones mind when you make the call to scratch a dog in any situation.

I'm not bashing anyones decission here and without seeing it first hand its hard to really make a right or wrong statement but just thought it would be an interesting topic.

If there really is LEGITIMATE confusion about what it is you a have to circle the tree (what I mean is if you honestly don't know what it is you have to vote to circle).

That is provided it could legitimately be a coon and you can't properly identify what it is. If you can't tell what it is but can definately tell it's NOT a coon but some other furry critter then you would have to vote that it was off game and either minus or scratch depending on the situation.

I would think this would be extremely rare.

I had somethin similar one night. The dogs treed a good legitimate den tree. There was SOMETHING in the den, we could see fur at one of the crevaces. There was something in there all right. One said "we need to plus it cause there is somethin in there and you know what it has to be". I said "no, I ain't plussin that cause I think it's a possum but I can't be sure. Looks more like a possum to me than a coon but it could definately be a coon"

They shut up and everybody voted to circle.

To this day I honestly don't know what it was in that den so IMO that was the proper way to score it.

Sounds like a messed up ordeal to me. I think RIP is correct, you would have to circle the tree.

well it would almost have to be a coon cause if you cant tell squirrel eyes from coon eyes you dont need to be coonhuntin an possum dont go that high in tree an most people know that ... jmo

Like I said, I didn't see it but from the way it was explained to me it sounded like a red/cinnamon colored coon. That would seem to make the most since if one thought it was a squirrel and one thought it was a ground hog. Like i said they said it was high in the tree and I have never seen or heard of a ground hog climbing that high and a red or cinnamon colored coon would resemble a squirrel but it was to big to be a squirrel.

Of course the hunt was over and the member saying it was a squirrel only had one chance to win. lol

FYI....I agree and support Tackett, Scott Engle, and RIP on this topic...lol

It must have been a Nt. Ch. cast to scratch for treeing off game. Once again, Judge's decision final.

Night Champion Class, Non Hunting Judge. Does the cast vote? or if they disagree does it goe to the Master of Hounds, is the real question to me. Just curious.

answer

If game is not positively identiflied the tree is circle without a question. Am opossum with go that high to. Well they do down here in sc. If might be in the water i think animals down here are a breed of there own lol. I have heard of judges just deleteing the points on tree before if voted on. do i think that is right no. just circle the tree. If you having to win a hunt on circle points anyway you need a new dog.lol hope that did not hit a nerve but it is the truth.
