how to score this?

2 dog nite ch cast. dog A stricks 1st, dog b 2nd.
Dog A trails out one way, dog b the other and trees.
Dog a is headed for a busy highway about half mi away and is really moving the track. While the clock is running on the tree handler a runs back to the truck and has someone drive out to the highway to watch for dog a should he get on it, he was already on the highway and was called off to prevent any mishap. Dog a returned to the cast as the tree was finished being scored. was given 100minus for leaving his track. Coon was seen at dog b's tree.
Back at the club house one guy said we should have scratched dog a since he wasn't handled by the handler?
The dog was too far away to ever call him in and wouldn't have come in anyway off a hot track. Handler a stayed to score dog b's tree.

I don't know about the spectator handling the dog, don't think it is allowed though.

Shouldn't the track points be deleted because the dog trailed onto the road???

If you are going to strictly follow the rule, handler B is scratched for leaving the cast to go back to the truck and scratched for spectator handling the dog while the clock is running.

I may have done the same thing handler B did because my dog is more valueable than a cast win but I'd take my scratchg without protest.

Tha's just a messed up ordeal bud. No a spectator isn't allowed to ever handle a dog although given the circumstancses id say to be a good sportsman about it id allow it. If it was a 4 dog cast i can pretty much bet that the other 3 guys would say to withdraw and get him or risk getting him killed.

I'm surprised someone didn't mention calling time out with a dog getting into obvious danger. Handler A or his spectator could have caught their dog. Dog B was treed before time would have been called, so his tree can still be scored.

Sometimes I think casts are a little quick to want to call time out when roads are involved but I'd rather be on the safe side. Last winter I had a dog get hit bad enough to cost me a bunch of money and set her back several months but not bad enough to put her down. I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone.

If I would have been handling dog A I would have insisted that time be called due to danger to the dog. As dog B was already treed we could have scored the tree after I got my dog back. Or if the handler of dog B would have agreed I would have sent the spectatior to catch the dog and scored his tree and met at the truck.

Call Timeout... send a spectator to catch dog A, and go score dog B's tree. Anyone can handle a dog during timeout.

5. CIRCLED AND DELETED POINTS

Delete points: (f) When Judge orders dogs to be called off because of live-stock or nearness to highway, building, etc.

8. TIME OUTS:

(f) If dog(s) declared treed, 10 minutes of hunting time may be demanded to search tree, or place of refuge, which is not a time out.

(h) Dog(s) declared treed, before time out is called, will be scored.

You guys are saying what SHOULD have happened and agree 100%. But....that wasn't the question. The question was what to do about a handler that leaves the cast, goes back to the truck and sends his spectator to handle his dog while the clock is still running. And that is a scratch offense even though that is the same thing I'm doing. Because if my dog is headed for a busy road, I'm not standing around taking a cast vote on calling timeout. I'm gone and I take my scratch.

There is another reality to this situation that never gets mentioned. The fact is, if a dog is bearing down on the hiway, thereis almost no chance of getting there ahead of the dog. But most of us are still gonna try.

how to score this

Thanks for all the good info. Time could have been called after dog b treed, spectator could have been then sent to call the dog off the road. YES, my dog a would gladly be scratched before having something bad happen, no cast win is worth that much

Actually when time out is called anyone can handle the dog, and anyone can help you catch the dog. As long as timeout is called!
