I tend to seperate this question into two categories...1. Can a hound from hunting stock make a pet? 2. Does the breeder even want to try and make them a pet? My answer to the first question is yes, they can make pets. Coonhounds, with individual attention, socialization, etc. can make a fine pet. They are very versatile in this respect and it is something that many breeders should be proud of. The second question.....its entirely upto the breeder to do what he wants, when he wants, and with whomever he wants. Its his work, his money and his time spent. He/she can decide whatever they choose. I wish that I could tell you how many people have been surprised to hear that my house pet is a 5 year old daughter of a 2x winning hog hunting dog from Mexico. Prior to that, it was a daughter of Ch. Chinaman who died at the ripe age of 14. Both fine housepets as thats what they were raised as from the beginning. The same can be done with hounds, start 'em early and as long as a person knows animal husbandry and to keep them a "dog" and not a person, they should be fine.
