I just received this e-mail from Candy Butterfield.I thought it would make a good tribute to a FINE hound.

Although we didn't get Billy directly from you it was because of you he existed. I felt I should let you know we lost him. Massive heart attack while running a bear. No more fitting way to go. It has left a true void I will admit. From the time he was gifted to us at 3 months old the dog never took a wrong step. He was at his first bear tree at 6 months and in his over 11 years he treed literally hundreds of bear. 30-40 average a season and a good portion of them were alone. He is a bit of a legend in these parts. He was a superb handling dog, more than that a part of our family. Although he was not a fan of the cold he came to understand that if he wanted to keep hunting with us he would have to run coyote. He was an excellent cold trailer and enjoyed a caught coyote! When we decided to start cat hunting he was the first we tried. The dog would walk at your side to where ever you took him and when he put his nose in his first cat track, he knew. Again numerous cats treed with that boy. A once in a lifetime dog I thank you.

We do enjoy the Stiffer & Whilash pups, and think they will make dogs. They have some huge shoes to fill to make Billy's :-)

I lost all of my good pictures of Billy in the house fire but I have a decent one of him treed and one I took just a few days before we lost him. I beautiful dog inside and out.

You are lucky to have had eleven years with a dog you thoroughly enjoyed. There are a lot worse ways to lose a dog. I know this may not help your grief, but time and new pups always helps.

If memory serves correctly Billy was out of Light Foot Cajun and a litter-mate to the Ricky dog that I sent to Dustin . Cajun was out of my Spyder female and was a 3/4 to Brian's Drifter dog.

Here is a pic of Cajun this picture was taken during a weeks hunting where Cajun teed 3 bear solo and 5 with the pack.

To all who were involved in this hounds wonderful long life... So sorry for your loss but wouldn't all of us like to have our hounds die doing what they love....

Were Ike and Spyder the two dogs you were trying to build on? Are they in most of the pedigrees of the current Lightfoot breed stock?

Every hound that we own carries the old Ike dog in it's pedigree as well as Spyder. Ike played a important role during his time Spyder played a important role during her time, but they were just links in the chain of the Light Foot bloodline. My Hooker female has been a important link in the bloodline today, every hound that we have carries Hooker at least once most carry her several times. The same will be true of Blitz , Dagger, Gambler or a number of the hounds that are alive today.
I beleive way to many folks chase the great hounds of the past. While we are proud of the Light Foot hounds of the past and all that they accomplished, We live in the present and if our hounds today are not better producers than our hounds of yesterday the mistakes have already been made and the theroies on breeding need to be rethought before any future breedings are made. We as a whole are producing the best pups that we ever have. I expect in five years we will be saying the same thing, in twenty years we will still be saying the same thing.
