why is it that it dont matter how loud of a hound you have . you get to the woods an strain your ears tryin to course him.but you can hear a house dog barkin 5 miles away?

think it has some relation to why a dog sounds so dang much louder at 4 AM barking at a stray cat in the backyard than anytime out in the woods

papa . i bet you know why . house dog is in the wide open and high pitch yap carries farther... i hunt one place youd almost call widerness. miles from the highway . and i hear trucks and house dogs when wind is right. does help me get my bearings though. . why do i love to hear my hounds bark in the woods. will trash my truck just to get where i can hear them and i want to kill same dog if he barks on chain..? i hitched 3 pups for first time this weekend... it wasnt quiet for awhile. got my water hose dragged out there and its quieter ..

but you are absolutely right -- when you're out there listening for a hound, the house dogs can be heard much farther away than the hounds.

I dont know about you guys but a lot af times if I dont hear my dog bark for a while, I can usually tell which direction he/she went as to which house dogs are getting riled up out of the blue. Drive a little closer to those house dogs and generally end up hearing one of my own.

Or, and I'm embarrassed to say, Katydid's! Autumn has a mouth that will blow you outta the woods. But turn her loose & then every lil yap from the 'football' dogs sounds just like her. Dang, glad to know I ain't then only one who has this trouble. Here I thought I was losing my mind, , glad it ain't all in my head

i couldnt explain why this is true but sure can back it up. my collie can be heard from a few miles away barkin at a passing cat in the night ( plenty of neighbors to back this us) and my hound is definetly louder, but her voice dont seem to travel as great in the woods....frustrating aint it
