I just got a new pup last night and couldnt be more pleased with her. Thanks Alan Kalal........ She seems to be crazy smart and a great looking pup out of Bellers Psyco. Ive raised and trained some pretty fair ones in my life and also failed more than once!! lol, My question is this........How many just throw the pup in the pen and wait till its old enough to hunt vrs throwing them up in the cab of the truck when you run to town, leave fido at home and take the "coondog" for a walk around the block, you know........bond with them like you would any other kind of dog? Ive raised bird dogs before and done that and they were just fine and mayb even worked a little better for me? but never a coon hound. Going to give this one a try tho!!

Wonder how many "COONDOGS" were raised like this?

When I have pups around they get more attention and go on walks twice a day if i live father off a main hwy they would be given the chance to run loose. I really belive it helps them pups as far as being not shy and people friendly. As far as letting them run loose lots of pups that have that luxry seem to start much faster jmo but any just my 2 cents.

thats who im trying to train my pup now let it ride in the truck to the store hang out with me every chance i get even take him to the beach i think this makes great dogs because coonhunting is one on one and spendas much time with them as you can jmo!!

I like to let mine run loose as much as possible but I have to watch them because I live next to a road. My newest pup I have been keeping on the deck during the day and just put him in the kennel at night. I've also took him for several rides in the dogbox when I make a quick run to the store. I believe the more you expose the dog to and the more time you spend with them the better. Pups seem to grow into much, much smarter dogs that handle a 1000 times better when I raise them this way. This pup is 11 weeks old and already knows his name and will go to his kennel on command. In my experience it makes training them a lot easier when they get older.

I agree. Whenever I have a pup me and my boys play with it a lot and go on walks in the woods every day. A dog can be a great pet AND a great coondog all in one in my opinion.

We bring all of our pups inside for a few weeks to let them bond with us, then pen them up with our best dog so the pup can bond with it before we finally pen them by themselves. Makes them love and respect us but also want to go with the older dog when it's time to hit the woods.

I've always raised pups with as much time with me as possible.. Taking them when I run into town, going down to the river, fishing etc... Up until this current pup I have (can't do it in the house I live in now) I used to raise them all in the house until about 6 months old.. I like them housebroke, just in case they need to come in the house in the future for any reason.. My two oldest dogs think they should be in the house by the fire after a successful cat hunt.. That has kinda been a part of their reward..

I think pups or hounds run the gammit, depending on breeding and handling some have personalities that make them want to be petted and played with some are just the opposite. I have had good hounds and bad ones on both sides. I don't think it hurts them to be "socialized" at all, but I don't think it will make them any better coon dog for it. Just my opinion. Tom

I let them run wild. If they want to be my buddy I am not hard to get along with, but if they don't I don't care. At starting time I either have a bond with the dog or I don't, I don't force it.

My dogs are part of the family. My male sleeps in the bed with me every night, and has since he was a puppy. My female stays outside running free in the yard during the day (its an acre that is fenced in) but sleeps in the house at night. I used to work at a sportsman's warehouse here in town, and my male would go to work with me, without a leash, and just stand behind the gun counter, or in the archery shop with me all day. I can look at him a certain way and he knows what im thinking lol i can snap my fingers and point to the ground and he will sit a hundred yards away. He is like a dang person. lol He goes fishin with me in the boat. Heck he goes everywhere.... but he will flat out get deep and tree a coon when its time!! I think its great to develop a personal relationship with them... but it makes it much harder to sell them if they don't cut it.

We take ours to the local flea market after they've had all their shots. There are pigs, goats, chickens, ducks, cats and some people that are even more scary If you can walk a hound through the Beebe Flea Market...you can take them ANYWHERE!!
