Picking a pup

If you were going to buy a pup at 7 weeks....and you own no other dogs

and you found some with a very well known sire...and very well known grand Sire on both top and bottom....

and you were going to keep this dog its entire life....

and you were going to hunt more for pleasure....but were open to hunts and breeding opportunities....

and you wanted to at least make a good initial investment...

and you could choose either a female or male from the same litter...

and the pups are super stakes but the litter was not nominated for performance...

Would you buy the female or the male?

and would $150 be a good price....or would it be best to spend more and find one with similar breeding that was from a litter nominated for performance?

I would like to hear some opinions...however, I should have asked earlier as I am making this decision today.

my opinion only:

if I was to this point, then I have looked at some dogs from various bloodlines. I would have seen what they look like (dont want to feed an ugly dog). I have looked at their papers seeing what is behind the pup. If there are good lines and 'old blood' I like, good. I have looked at mom and dad if available (how do they look, how are they built, do I like what I see).

as for the pups, I will let them run around, a few at a time. see how they move, interact with each other, are they loners, fighters, submissive, etc. How do they react when you call them or try to get their attention? how are they built? do they have correct lines and movement? Also, stack them up(even if you dont show). this will give you a better look at how they are put together and how they react to you touching them. Some will be shy or fight, some will not. majority of pups at the 7-8 wk age will look like it will after it grows up. I have seen this from experience.

as for the sex, do you want to deal with heat cycles, raising litters, missing hunt time. or just get a stud fee and possible pup from breeding? do you like boys more than girls or vice versa? In my experience, girls are easier to train.

if not competition hunting, then the SS or performance is irrelevant unless you think by breeding it will be important to buyers. **If sire was performanced you may be able to do the pup...not sure**

price - $150 could be either a great deal, diamond in the rough or other. are the parents PR dogs? is this a first time breeding? are there other pups out of this cross or one of the parents? how are they doing?

it comes down to: pick what you like and what you can afford to pay. if the pup doesnt turn out to be nothing but a pet, then you're out $150 & registration fees. but then again....you never know. If you have ever looked at a coonhound, then you know what you have seen and what you like and dont like. if the parents and the pups appeal to you, then go for it.

good luck.

Close your eyes and pick one . Or go for the ugliest one, or if I raise the litter I keep the very last one

You had better plan on alot of luck. Most pups even from top litters dont make good dogs, so giving yourself a life sentence with that dog might be mistake number 1. From an investment standpoint buying a pup that is not performance nominated is mistake number 2.

if i was going to pick a pup that i planed on keeping for life i try to get the best breeding of what ever you want.

just to let you know something about picking a pup. you can look at little pups & find the most active one in the bunch & go back an hour later & it might be sleepy or just eat & another one is the most active. a good breeder that has raised a litter right & spent the time he should have with his pups to get them off to as good a start as he can. can tell you the actions, boldness, temperment of every pup in a litter.

take a real coon tail and tie a string to it and show it to the pups. Let them play with it and see how they react, pick the one that shows the most interest. Thats how i do it

It's a crap shoot.

The extent of registry is important tho. If you want SS and Perf be sure you get it. Too many make their crosses and don't want to spend the extra having the litter nominated. They don't mind charging too much for the pups tho.

Pretty pup! I'm crossing my Kentucky River Mundar with a gyp that goes back to Kentucky River Rowdy on boths sides. I hope I can get them into the right hands. Someone like you that wants to keep one forever! Good luck!

Thanks

Yes, Schmirnoff is out of Gus and Gus is out of Stylish Pete(the dog that was stolen at Aurora from its box.)
And on the dam side, her sire is Buck Creek's Mr Smith.

My only regret at this point is that Gus was not paid up on Preformance Sire for 2012, so the litter cant be nominated.
But he will be UKC and PKC registered.

I took him out back of the house this morning and he kept his nose to the ground...tail whipping in the wind and kept moving the entire time. Not sure what he was tracking, just glad to see he didnt sit at my feet or look at me with that look of "I am cold and unsure as to what is going on here" lol

I am probably jumping the gun, but I am thinking of taking him out with another dog very soon and getting him exposed to some action, although he is right at 2 months. What the earliest you have turned a pup loose?

I don't know how many hunts he will get in, but he will be hunted a lot. I go at least once a week, and when he starts treeing his own...it may be every night.

I might be a little different than most.
I like to hunt, and love my dogs.
Most people I have been around...seem to love to hunt and may or may not like their dogs.
