my opinion only:
if I was to this point, then I have looked at some dogs from various bloodlines. I would have seen what they look like (dont want to feed an ugly dog). I have looked at their papers seeing what is behind the pup. If there are good lines and 'old blood' I like, good. I have looked at mom and dad if available (how do they look, how are they built, do I like what I see).
as for the pups, I will let them run around, a few at a time. see how they move, interact with each other, are they loners, fighters, submissive, etc. How do they react when you call them or try to get their attention? how are they built? do they have correct lines and movement? Also, stack them up(even if you dont show). this will give you a better look at how they are put together and how they react to you touching them. Some will be shy or fight, some will not. majority of pups at the 7-8 wk age will look like it will after it grows up. I have seen this from experience.
as for the sex, do you want to deal with heat cycles, raising litters, missing hunt time. or just get a stud fee and possible pup from breeding? do you like boys more than girls or vice versa? In my experience, girls are easier to train.
if not competition hunting, then the SS or performance is irrelevant unless you think by breeding it will be important to buyers. **If sire was performanced you may be able to do the pup...not sure**
price - $150 could be either a great deal, diamond in the rough or other. are the parents PR dogs? is this a first time breeding? are there other pups out of this cross or one of the parents? how are they doing?
it comes down to: pick what you like and what you can afford to pay. if the pup doesnt turn out to be nothing but a pet, then you're out $150 & registration fees. but then again....you never know. If you have ever looked at a coonhound, then you know what you have seen and what you like and dont like. if the parents and the pups appeal to you, then go for it.
good luck.
