Well there are some who believe Sackett Jr would have reproduced just as well if he had never seen a coon. They might use that train of thought to justify breeding a female that is bred the way they like even if she hasn't performed in the woods. Not saying I agree, just saying that might be what some are thinking.

Jim, my honest opinion is very near to what you posted concerning Sackett Jr. The act of hunting a dog doesn't change their genetics nor will it determine how a dog will produce. I believe that the act of hunting a dog and finishing them to about %90 simply allows us to see what they are. The gentics were there to begin with but now we have a better understanding of what exactly they are, thus allowing us to make better breeding decisions. But, why run the risk of using a female that you know absolutely nothing about other than what a paper says? Now do the same with a "brood female's" daughter and I feel that within 2 generations, you can be a long ways from what the pedigree says. Of course, if there were Sackett Jrs for all of us, it wouldn't matter. lol

Yeah but what you all don't realize is that hunting these dogs is what breeds that instinct into them.... If you just stop hunting and breed down from that, eventually you've got nothing.
