big eastern dback in NC

Even though everybody says they are almost gone in these parts, looks like this one had been around for awhile.
Greene County, NC

Here is the story that came with the pics on email:
These pictures came from my brother who works with the State Forestry Commission. They were cruising timber a couple of weeks ago in Greene County and walked up on this snake. My brother said that he was about four (4) feet from this snake before he realized what it was. He thought it was a dead tree limb on the ground.

Just a reminder for everyone, with the heat like it is ALL creatures
are looking for water so be careful where you put your feet when outside in your yard or while working on a job at work.

postscript: it wasnt my brother, it was the brother of the person who sent the email

I suppose the only good thing about the big ones is that they are easier to see.

Holy Crap! We have killed a couple nearly that size here in South Georgia over the past few years! Luckily none quite that big and only one so far this year!

Everyone be safe, wear your snake boots and keep your EYES and EARS open!!

Priscilla

I'm just curious why they killed it. Don't get me wrong, it's dangerous, but I'm not a fan of killing something for nothing.

It's not like it's in their backyard and their protecting their kids. It was in the wilderness.

Did they eat it?

When a poisonous snake gets that big it needs to be killed. That could strike a man in the chest region or a kid in the face easily. One less monster snake isn't going to throw the ecosystem into a tailspin.

Guy's and gal's when I tell you we are infestested with snakes I am not lying. This snake was killed in Greene Co., Ms. The guy holding the snake is the one that almost stepped on it and he is the one that killed it, give that man a raise!!! From about I-20 south they get really bad, if you hunt in the hills you deal with the rattlesnakes, if you hunt bottom land you deal with cottomouths. I quit hunting in the summertime when I got my best coon dog ( and best buddy ) bit a few years ago. The snake that bit him had a 1 1/2 " bite on him, and everybody says give them alittle benadryl and they will be ready to go in 3 or 4 days( ha ha ) it took Taz about three months to get over his. He was bit on the forearm and he swelled up so bad that it bust under his arm pit area and all the flesh rotted off that area. Looked like a deer that had been skinned you could see the muscles and shoulder joint. He was five years old a that time and I am proud to say that if he lives to see Nov. 15 he will be 13 years old and still treeing coons everytime out, he acts like he is six years old when you go get him out of the kennel on a cold night. Take care, Gary.
