Dogs not eating

I have been feeding Black Gold for about 9 months. My dogs would eat it, but they didn't seem real eager to do so. Now they just don't want to eat it at all. We have a house dog that nearly starved. She wouldn't touch the stuff. Is anyone else"s dogs doing this?

Thats what I'm feeding now. All the bags I get have an odd smell to it. At least to me.

I suppose I'm the only one that does it , but i change brands about every 2 or 3 months. I've noticed dogs get tired of the same old stuff all the time.

I do try to keep a quality feed and I use about 4 or 5 differant brands and rotate them. I heard guys say that changing that oftin isn't good for the dogs , but I still think it works best for me.

When I'm nearing a change , I mix the remaining feed with the new and gradually change them over and it has always serve me well.

My solution

Texas heat plays a big part here in dogs losing their appetites. I have a couple of Plotts whom I believe would prefer a frozen Margarita in this heat. I mix canned dogfood well into their dry food (half a can usually does the trick) but if the dog's really picky I use a full can mixed in to cover every piece of kibble and it usually works.

Jeff I have had only one black dog at my house that didnt inhale dog food, any brand of dog food including Black Gold when I was able to get it. I know your like me and always on a budget but go to the PKC site and look up Dog Food and read. Its good material. Or click here http://forum.prohound.com/viewtopic...asc&start=0 to view. I think you will find it enteresing.

I'm like

skyblu.I know it don't get as hot here as it does in Texas, but it still gets pretty hot and humid. When it does my hounds don't eat right either.Well, most of 'em.(If my Gr.Nt. ain't huntin',he'd rather be eatin').But as soon asthe weather starts to cool down just a little, their appetites do to. I work outside doin' construction work as a carpenter.I very seldom will eat lunch during those months.
Just a thought.

another thing you have to consider in this hot climate is ....
that some of the brands of feed that have real meat in them and high fat content can go bad. If they are kept in a hot place they can get rancid. That could also be why the dogs wont eat it. I had this happen before with another type of feed, but never had a problem with mine not eating Black Gold.

We feed late in the evening after it has cooled off.

We feed Black Bag and Ultimate Adult. we take a regular can of aplo slices and split it 3 ways and mix over the food very good. We have never had any problems with them eating. It is gone before we can get the kennels cleaned out.

My dog has lost his appetite twice. Once in the midsummer heat, the other was when it turned out he was allergic to the food.

If it's just something that their tired of eating I've found adding broth helps break it up while staying on the same diet.

I would recommend avoiding food with wheat. According to my vet with hounds that is a common issue.

I've got a hard keeper here at the house right now, and I've found that mixing in canned food with his Pro-Plan helps him clean his bowl. I have one other dog that won't generally eat his food in the morning...he waits to eat until I bring him inside for the night while it's hot. I was a little leery of using canned food at first, but I bought a couple cans of Purina ONE brand and haven't seen it upset his stomach or change his stool.

Black Gold/Quality Issues

I fed Black Gold 26/18 from the spring of 2000 up until this spring (9 years). When I first started feeding it you could not beat the quality for the price. Low food consumption, very low stool volume, and the dogs looked and acted great. The bags even had a pleasant smell when you opened them. As one of my buddies said, it makes you want to go get a bowl & and some milk! LOL Just really smelled good and always had the same color & size/texture. During 2006 the prices began to start climbing. In the summer of 2007 I started noticing that trademark smell was not there in some of the bags & the kibble size was differing from bag to bag. Early this year the color, kibble size, and texture started to vary drastically from bag to bag. I became disgusted with paying 25$ a bag for a product that was inconsistant & inferior to their original product which was $10 per bag cheaper. I don't know what happened, but Black Gold 26/18 is not even in the same ball park it used to be years ago. Just another average dog food at a premium price. Just my opinion.

This spring I had the same issue. I wormed them and then I had blood work and a stool sample done on all of my dogs and it came back with good health.

I then when back to the place that I purchased the bag of food to find out if there was something going on with the food. We contacted Black Gold. The rep that I talked to was convinced that it was just a simple matter of my dogs having worms. He also gave me a bunch of reason as to why it was MY fault that the dogs were not doing well on black gold. He offered to send me 2 more bags which I have still not seen and its been over 6 months.

Nothing was really resolved except that Eagle Pack now has a new customer and my dogs seem to be in much better condition.

After feeding Black Gold for 5+ years, I was disgusted to say the least with the way Black gold handled this situation.

I agree with what Vic said Black Gold used to be the cream of the crop. Anymore its barely good enough for a feeder bucket in my opinion. I feed pride 26/18 mixed with 22/16 and my dogs do great

Thanks everyone

Lee, I did some checking. I can get the Enhance very reasonable. I have feed it before. The dogs liked it. I just figured that Black Gold was better. I'm switching back to Enhance.

JMullins

I'm feeding the Pride as well, 26/18 mixed with 22/12 during the warm weather & 26/18 straight up during the cold. Dogs are looking & doing great on less feed than I was feeding on the last of the Black Gold. Over $6 dollar savings per bag on the 26/18. I need to bring my blue female biscuit eater up your way & you could break out that old crippled up blue male. Maybe we could listen to them burn up some of that Pride dog food together chasing some of those Ohio Woodlot Coons!
