Our female, PCH Whitney Hill Sue, had 8 puppies this evening. We have a heat lamp on & a wooden ledge for the puppies to crawl under so that they don't get laid on. This is our first litter, so any advice would be appreciated. Also, just wondering when & how we should clip the dew claws? Thanks in advance for any advice, Hunter Hall.

Make sure its not too warm, generally this time of the year you usually don't have to worry too much about keeping them warm...

Heres how i take care of dew claws.

Day 3 i use dog toe nail clippers and stick all of the dew claw thru it and cutting them off flush with the skin. They'll bleed from time to time so have some baby powder close to dap on them and put them back in the box. Momma generally takes care of everything but if you want to speed the process you can put some triple anti biotic ointment on them after they stop bleeding.

Past that, keep momma feed right and she'll pass it on to the pups.

Its also a good practice to keep water bowl cleaned out every day this time of year.

Keep some albon on hand just incase.

I give 5in1 at week 5-6 and a 7in1 and kennel cough at week

Oh yeah, get a good liquid wormer ready (safegaurd) liquid works great and worm them at week 2 and so on every 2 weeks until 3 months old... then monthly...

Thanks for the info. guys. We have 5 males and 2 females, due to the loss of one female later last night. Jim, my dad is hoping that there might be another little Joker in the litter, he sure loves that dog!

Hunter,
I ditto Jack's remarks on not getting them to warm this time of year. The mother usually will do fine keeping them warm as long as it is not real cold(below 50 degrees or so).

Also Jack's advice on the dew claws is right on, I cut them off prior to day four. The mother licks the puppies keeping their legs clean. You will only see a little dot on their legs after a few days from the dew claws being removed.

Glad to hear you had a nice litter. Sorry she has lost one, but that happens along the way, it is hard to raise 100% everytime.

The mother may act protective which is very normal of a mother, but if she allows you to handle them be sure you don't have another dogs scent on you at the time, she may not care for that scent and shove the pup away when you put it back in with her.

I have another question. When should I litter register w/ UKC? And what about AKC?

Give yourself a couple weeks or so to see how many are going to make it for sure. I usually register sometime during the third week. By this time you can see if the pups are stong and if the mother is caring for them properly (ie providing enough milk, cleaning and nurturing them as a mother should. 6 is still a very good litter of pup for a gyp to raise.
