Going UKC
I have been in dogs for almost 20 years. I have traditionally registered mine AKC and have participated in a myrid of AKC events. Everything from confirmation, field, and obedience and I have titled dozens of dogs. I am a serious breeder and exhibitor. Because of recent events with AKC regarding their lack of legislative protection, punishment of breeders who actually breed, and apparent apathy for the threats being presented to dog breeders through anti-dog and breeder legislation, I am seriously considering moving my dogs to UKC. Mostly because I have (as well as many in my clubs) been impressed with UKC's diligence in supporting efforts to stop Anti-breeder/anti-dog legislation. I am not the only one. Currently, having discussed and conversed with dozens of other breeders that I know, they are feeling the same way.
There is just one problem...
While I know that UKC deserves money for registering dogs etc, because it takes work to enter the information; many of us have decades of breeding and money invested in AKC registration. All in told the cost of moving our breeding programs to UKC is proving, well, exhorborant. Many of us have years worth of dogs we co-own and co-breed litters on. Many of us own up to twenty or more (especially the toy dog breeders) of our own dogs. While they may not all live with us, we would want those dogs that we own to be moved to UKC for future litter registrations.
The thing is, the people I know personally is only a very tiny number of individuals who feel the SAME way. There are so many more out there. Probably thousands.
Considering the amount of potential litter registration revenue that could be made for 'adopting" these AKC dogs into UKC, it would seem to me that it would benefit UKC to come up with some sort of bulk move for dog breeders. I realize that they offer a discount on (I think its) 5 or more dogs at a time. But the reality of it is, this simply isn't enough of a discount to make things worth while. Face it, we as breeders owners have an extremely large amount of pedigree info to transfer as well.
I would think, in the light of so much AKC frustration that it would behoove UKC to consider opening it's doors with "free" registration of AKC dogs. They could do this for a limited time perhaps. Maybe thirty days out of the year, much like open registration for insurance, maybe even limit this move to AKC dogs only? I would think that the future litter registrations, event fees, and furture payou outs in registrations from subsequent dogs listed with them would more than make up for the cost. While I know there would be a slight loss on UKC's side in the beginning it could very well pay off. Perhaps to save resources they could make this an ONLINE process only. Where individuals are responsible for transfering pedigrees and typing in the data for record keeping. Any mistakes of course would be the responsiblity of the one entering the data and they would have to pay for corrections.
Any how. I figured it was worth a shot to mention this to UKC, in hopes that they might consider it. I think in the long run the profits would be well worth the initial loss.
