just a thought: legal fund

this (missing dogs) seems to be happening more and more often and to our dismay, either the dogs are not found or they are and the perps get nothing...the lucky ones get big fines.

my thought, all of us (show folks and hunters) invest millions of dollars into UKC, AKC, PKC, etc every year. what would it take for any or all of these organizations to create a legal fund that could help with these cases that need prosecution?

to me its an investment in each KC's business. Just as this latest missing redbone may cause the owner to quit the dog business, how many other may follow suite if it happens to them?

if more and more dogs go missing and nothing is prosecuted, where is the KC's business then?

any opinions? suggestions? would the KC's consider it?

I wonder how chipping the hounds is working out country wide....
i guess if they are stolen, it wouldn't matter anyway.

Why would we have to have the KC's do it? Do hound hunters have a National Association? I know other sportsmen groups have national organizations.

Maybe, we should be getting state associations and breed associations together to consider a national organization for hound owners rights.

At a minimum, I think we really need to develop a network that hound owners can ask for guidance when their hounds are shot or stolen. Right now, most ever one just trips through the experience without the benefit of much guidance.

If a national organization is too much, then maybe we should approach another already formed group such as the Sportsmen Alliance and ask for their help.

What i do know is that doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

I agree Larry. Every state should have an organization that represents free cast houndsmen and then we could go for a national organization comprised of those state organizations. I would not be in favor of putting this in the hands of the KC's.

not a bad idea, but if the KC's were at least behind it and maybe they could provide some of that legal guidance you were speaking of.

i think most states do have an assoc., but in all these cases that have been on here, how many have contacted their assoc for assistance? are the state assoc available to provide the assistance needed?

The SC State CHA started a Legal Defense Fund three years ago. The fund is for members who have a hound shot, killed, or stolen.
It costs $10.00 a year to join until the fund reached $9000.00.
If your hound is shot, killed, or stolen we provide the funds for the lawyer, investigation, whatever. If you win a settlement you simply repay the fund. We had a lawyer to review it and make sure we had everything as it should be.
Since we started this fund you would think that every coonhunter in SC who cares anything about their hounds would join. BOY WAS THAT A MISCONCEPTION!! We have maybe 200 of us who have joined.
Since it started we have had three cases reported where a hound was shot. Two of those who called me didn't belong to the fund. They wanted to join naturally, but it was too late. The other case was a member but he had no idea who had shot the hound.

I'll be glad to forward any info to anyone interested or you can go to our website and read about in under state association programs.

The USSA has a Sporting Dog Defense Fund it costs $25.00 a year I believe, renewed mine a few months back and can't remember for certain.

THATS THE REASON I DONT TAKE PEOPLE TO MY KENNELS DONT REALLY LIKE THEM TO COME TO MY HOUSE BUT MY KENNELS ARENT CLOSE TO THE HOUSE,I HUNT DOGS FOR OTHERS ALSO AND I MAKE THE OWNERS MEET ME OUT SOMEWHERE THESE DAYS PEOPLE WILL DO ANYTHING.THEY SHOULD MAKE IT A FELONY TO TAKE A MANS HOUNDS OUT OF KENNEL OR OFF THE TREE,WHEN GO OUT OF TOWN MIND STAYS IN THE MOTEL ROOM AT NIGHT.BUT THEY SHOULD GO TO DNA TESTING ON ALL PAPERED DOGS THAT WOULD STOP SOME OF IT,THEIRS DOG TRADERS OUT THEIR PUT PAPERS ON DOGS THATS NOT RIGHT THEN THEY SELL THEM AND THE BUYER HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEY BOUGHT AND ITS GOING ON MORE THAN PEOPLE THINKS.BUT A LEGAL FUND WOULD BE NICE CAUSE ALOT TIMES THE COURT AROUND HERE JUST LAUGH IT OFF,THEN DOG OWNER MOST TIME GETS IN MORE HOT WATER OVER TAKING IT IN HIS OWN HANDS.THEN THE DOG THEIF

the $9000 limit, so does that mean when fund reaches that no one has to pay membership?

how has the fund been advertised to make people aware that its there?

Thats correct, when the fund reaches the set point we don't pay into it anymore. If someone uses it and wins they simply put the money back in. If they don't win when it drops down to a certain point the members pay back into it to the set point.
Every club in SC has received letters concerning the Legal Defense Fund several times. It is on our website and our reporter has included it in his articles quite a few times.

I believe the legal fund idea is good. However, I also believe some of this shooting/disappearance situation is related to H$U$/PETA/ASPCA indoctrination & we should ALSO be paying more attention to eliminating the H$U$/PETA threats. Tennessee legislators just buckled to their influence. Remember, these AR groups favor KILL SHELTERS & THEY ADVOCATE THE ERADICATION OF HOUNDS & HUNTING. We need billboards in major cities showing a AR quotes & links to a web site that tells the REAL story about these AR groups. For example -

Please, if possible, send me the info on your legal fund organization. As President of the Texas Black & Tan Coonhound Association I'd like to see if we can get something rolling here. Texas is one of the major targets of AR groups - we have large populations of hounds and stock dogs. A couple of my hounds have "disappeared" while hunting. I also know people whose hounds have been shot.

why put a cap on it? what happens it multiple cases are filed at the same time and you run out of money to assist?

I mentioned once before about the different 'KCs(this one included) adding $1.00 to the entries for a fund similar to what is being brought up here. With as many entries to the different events they have there would be a nice little war chest in no time for issues like this and possibly legislative issues, also.
