Anyone ever had this problem?

I was just wondering if anyone has ever had someone buy a dog off them and pay with a check, only to have the check returned because the account no longer is open. When I tried to contact the person at the address they no longer live there. I basically have given them a dog. If you have had anyone do this what did you do. I'd sure like to get my money.

You can seek legal action, passing a bad check is illegal...

I wouldn't go the civil suit route that would require the use of a personal attorney, court costs, etc.
Both hot checks and fraud are felonies, just give the check to the D.A.

why don't you do everybody on the board a favor by posting who the lowlife is before he has a chance to cheat somebody else?

had it happen on a shock collar i bought, only i never recieved the merchandise. since the person i bought from was out of state, there local law was no help. told me i had to drive down and file a complaint in person. so i got on the internet paid about 30.00 got the names and addresses of all the family in the area, called every day, and night several times. pretty much annoyed his family so bad that i got my collar, did the same thing on a bad check written to me over a dog. call and call often all hours. no such thing as being off limits. i got my money from them too when they found out i was never going away. just got sick of hearing from me. if they don't answer just hang up and keep calling. they'll get so sick of the phone ringing you'll get paid. be as annoying as you can and persistant. when they figure out your not going away they'll pay.

I'd like to give the guy a chance to make good as he has a new baby and a wife. He had his phone numbers changed so I can't call so humiliation may be the my only resort now.

MydogRocks

If you have the registration number on that dog, report it stolen to UKC, if the guy tries to register the dog in his name, his current address will show up. Then call the cops.

It's more trouble than it's worth of they are out of state. It has happened to us before, with someone we thought we could trust.

Best advise is to not take checks. In fact, in our area there has been problems with people faking money orders. So it seems now cash is the only safe answer. We will occasionally take checks for puppy deposits, only becuase we have time to make sure the check is good before the pup leaves. However, we are strictly cash or money order now.

Others already mentioned contacting UKC about this, and preventing him/her from being able to register the dog. That's probably the best you'll be able to do in this situation.

Beware, if you post the name of whoever did this on this post it will be deleted.....

check

Call the bank that its drawed on. They will tell you if the acount is still open. They should help you with knowing when the money they deposit shows up. If its closed then its going to be kinda hard. Unless you can find him.

That's why

I always deal with cash.Whether I'm buyin' or sellin' a dog.Matter of fact,I just bought a young dog today in N.C.I told the young man last week that I wanted the dog but could he wait a week so I could transfer funds from one account to another.Cash makes everyone happy.Besides,it ain't the same today as it used to be years ago.You can't trust no one hardly.Sad but true.

Something else you can try if by some chance the account ISN'T closed....most banks offer check verification. You can call the bank and give the teller the account number and amount the check is written for, and they'll tell you if funds are available. If they are hightail it to the bank and get a replacement/cashier's check. The bank I do this the most with at work charges like $10 to get a replacement check, but it'd be worth it to get the rest of the money. I've got several customers who like to try to float checks on me almost every month at work, and once the date on the check hits I start calling every day until the funds are there, and once they are I get my butt to the bank and get my money. I've had some irate customers when their plan to float the check gets foiled but hey, they shouldn't be trying to do it anyway! Just a thought...

My suggestion would be to post the guys name on here and someone may know how to get in contact with him. If he has done this to you then he probably has or will do it to someone again. Peer preasure still works as a good way to get things accomplished. I have used checks to buy dogs and have taken checks. I don't buy sob stories and I hate it when an adult uses their children to pull your heart strings. Have heard of several people who use their kids to get high priced pups for little or no money and then say well they lost interest a week later. Bull!!! Anyway I hope you get your money and I would post his name because somebody knows him and may make the point better than you can. A close friend makes more impact than a stranger. Forget if he has a new baby and a wife. I got a wife and four kids and don't pass bad checks and never will. I do take checks but like the post before, the check will be cashed and good before any papers exchange hands.
